My OH is about to upgrade his phone, he wants a Samsung phone but wants the speech to text on it, as he struggles to see and cannot spell very well. He doesnt necessarily want the top of the range, so would appreciate any help in finding the correct phone for him. He has put off going to the phone shop as he doesnt want the hard sell and end up with a phone that is not what he wants.

Thanks in anticipation for all your help/views

As far as he is concerned they have a good reputation, and hes not interested in an I-Phone or a Blackberry.
  • fair enough but there are other alternatives than just iphones and blackberries, those aren't the only two options other than samsung

for example there are phones on the market designed specifically for those with poor eyesight

The Galaxy S2 has the facility, so should many phones now anyway. For most Android phones there are apps available from the market such as Vlingo

I think all Android smartphones have this built in. However, IMO it is far from being perfect and I wouldn't rely entirely on it. Definitely it is worth trying to get an idea of how good/bad it is.
I use 'Swipe' keyboard app and there is no need to spell correctly as it offers you several words to chose from: http://www.swype.com/tips/swype-basics/

The cheapest Samsung androids start from below £100 (e.g. Galaxy Europe).

Best text to speech is Siri on the iphone 4s.

The new version of windows phone also has an excellent voice to text which is more reliable than android and almost as good as iphone. You can also get Samsung phones with Windows Phone.

You should tell your OH that all of these functions have to use an internet connection so if he's not in reception or on wi-fi then it won't work.
