Hi everyone,
I am replanning my lounge & have accepted my 46" sharp LCD is just too big for the room so am planning on selling it to get a smaller tv.
I'll have about £400 to spend and was thinking of a LED however after research not sure if its the right decision?!
Ideally i'd like a smart tv with iplayer etc
Preferably freeview HD
Can anyone recomend any or tell me what to avoid?
I'm thinking Sony or Samsung.
Got this one for my parents which is good:

So i could go for one of these:

Should i blow the budget on a LED? i could wait until after christmas if it means i might get a better deal

Both LED and LCD actually use an LCD screen, the difference between the two are how they are illuminated.
The technologies have very similar pros and cons given the actual screen is the same thing. LED are thinner/ lighter and more energy efficient. Many suffer from clouding (uneven lighting) but this comes down to the individual TV rather than a particular model though some models are more prone than others. Clouding however can be compared to LCDs own uneven lighting issues when they are edge lit and you find the sides of pictures are brighter than the middle.
Best thing is to go and look to see which looks better to you personally. Whilst my LCD screen does suffer from clouding to a minor degree in real life watching it is not an issue.0 -

I'd probably go for both. I have an LCD TV with CCFLs, which seems absolutely fine from a few metres away, but my LCD monitor with LED backlighting is much better than my old screen when close-up.
I used to get eyestrain after using my old monitor for a while, but that's disappeared with the LED backlighting.0 -
As above, your choice is between LED and CCFL as a choice between backlighting technologies.
Fact is a good CCFL (or old style) TV will have a far better picture than a cheapo LED backlit one. The picture is more important to me than a few mm shaved or a few watts less being used, remember also that a thinner screen means less space for speakers...0 -

Typical Woman!!
It simply CANNOT be too big, it's a TV...:j
Sacrifice something else and make room for it.0 -

My LED-backlit 24" monitor was only £160 a couple of years ago and I find the image quality much clearer and less eyestrain-inducing than on my £600 CCFL-backlit 32" TV... I thought (may well be wrong here!) that LED-backlighting was generally considered better than CCFL...0 -

Really depends on how its implemented, some LED tv's are terrible for clouding which makes it very annoying watching movies with black bars top and bottom
Interesting... I hadn't heard of that problem, so I'm glad you mentioned it.
I'm really happy with my LED-backlit monitor (despite it being dirt cheap) and certainly haven't noticed any clouding issues, but I tend to watch relatively low-resolution video on it (from iPlayer, etc.) rather than DVDs, so maybe that makes it less obvious... then again, it looks absolutely fine when used as a PC at 1920x1080 resolution. Would it be more of a problem on larger screens (like TVs) where the LEDs might be further apart...?0 -

Most people sit further away from their tv than the recommended distance, which is around two-and-a-half times the screen size.
So the viewing distance for the OP's existing tv would be about 10ft.0
