Thinking of getting Nokia Lumia..

  • I too was looking at the Nokia Lumia, i was going to buy sim free and unlocked but it looks like they have put the date back to January for that?
Can you use a windows phone as a wifi hotspot using your 3g signal like you can on android phones? I could not see that capability when i was playing with it in the shop.
  • Why not just buy it on pay as you go on three and get it unlocked?

Is it easy enough to do? How much would it cost?

Never had a phone unlocked before so all advice would be welcome.:D

    Hi,

You can either do it yrself - try looking on giffgaff.com for unlocking codes or, you can take it to any place that does phones ie not Carphone Warehouse, and then they will charge you max of £5.

If by any chance its more then either haggle or go away and find another cheaper place

  • Really, never thought it would be as easy as that! Might even give the three network a chance before i get it unlocked as i've never used it.

    thanks everyone.
  • There's no tethering on the Lumia 800 or 710.
  • It looks like a good phone, but I'm put off by some of the limitations of Windows Phone 7.

As mentioned, no tethering (so no wifi hotspots)
    No memory card expansion
    No front-facing camera
    Search button hard-coded to Bing

Another pretty good review here http://www.reghardware.com/2011/11/10/review_nokia_lumia_800_windows_phone_7_mango_smartphone/
  • Hi folks, thought i'd give you an update.

i decided to get the Nokia Lumia yesterday and i must say i am very impressed with it, it is a complete joy to use and set up was simple.

Got it from Three on PAYG, i thought i'd give the network a chance but unfortunately the reception in my house is zero, TMOBILE with whom my contract ends next week give me 2g and sometimes a weak 3g signal but with Three i have nothing so i will have to get my Lumia unlocked.

The windows software states that the Lumia is capable of tethering but needs a sotware update from your network? so maybe this is possible after all..... maybe worth investigating.

The W7 "Mango" software release will not tether if it's in it's original form, but the "NoDo" update allows it. However although Microsoft have released NoDo it then needs to be checked/approved /tweaked by Nokia in this case and then the network you are on.

It may or may not be finally released for a phone, like any update sometime the network just don't release the upgrades so the choice is to flash it to the makers ROM, and lose any warranty, or live with the limitations.

NoDo update came out earlier this year, it was a pre-Mango update. Mango does support tethering but only if it's enabled by the manufacturer. Nokia have said they will be enabling tethering in a future update.
