How to find out how fast Sky Broadband would be to my house?

As the title says, how can I find out how fast it would be to compare with Virgin?

I have looked on Sam Knows and come up with this:

BT ADSL broadband availability

You are connected to the Seacroft telephone exchange.
  • ADSL is available in your area
  • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
  • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL2+ services
According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support
up to 2Mbps via ADSL
5.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max
7Mbps or greater via ADSL2+

So, what does that mean? I get broadband at 2mbps or greater than 7mbps? Sky seems to suggest from 2-11.4mbps or 20mbps?

What does Samknows say about LLU offerings? (Anything more than 8meg will be ADSL2+, which is what the LLU operators use.)

It says yes next to it?!

I presume it must be ADSL2+ and be the higher speeds then?

I really don't know much about this stuff to be honest.
  • Yes - the relevant estimate is the 7Mbps+ one (ADSL2+ LLU)

However it's only an estimate - nobody can know until it's all set up and running, so it might be higher or lower in practice.

It looks like it's getting upgraded again soon to:

    BT FTTC broadband availability

You are connected to the Seacroft telephone exchange.
    • FTTC should be available in your area from 01/12/2011

    Downstream Min: 24.2 Mbps
    Downstream Max: 28.2 Mbps
    Upstream Min: 10.5 Mbps
    Upstream Max: 11.7 Mbps

I just wanted some comparison with my 10mbps that I get from Virgin, which is probably slower and more expensive than what it appears I can get from Sky, and it was Virgin who told me to look at Sam Knows.
  • OK - so you have a choice of between 10Mbps and 50Mbps (maybe 100Mbps) from Virgin at present, perhaps 7Mbps from Sky.

FTTC then opens up the possibility of the higher speeds as above from December, from a number of suppliers. Once that is launched, you can then take a look at the different options on that platform. As an aside, though I'm sure Sky are looking at it, there are no plans announced yet to supply anything on the fibre platform. So you may be best to bide your time for a month or so.

I am happy with the 10mbps package from Virgin, you get what you pay for, if I wanted the faster speeds obviously I would have to pay more.

What I am trying to compare between Sky and Virgin is like with like. Right now, Sky would be around the same speed for the equivalent Virgin package, but would cost less, then if it works out that Sky is actually faster.....

It is all something to talk to Virgin about anyway when I ring up to cancel or change my package.
