O2 network hacked?tx sent from mob not me. Advise please

Options
Hi all just need a little info and thought this was a good place to ask. My friend is on o2 and yesterday got a call from his grandad that hed sent him,a explicit message which he actually hadnt. He called o2 and asked whats happened and the cs said hes probably be hacked on his mobile via him using facebook on his mobile so said there was nothing they could do just change his number and contact the police. To this I told him the cs has fobbed him off with that excuse as there network should have failsafes in place for this not to happen? I asked if the mobile was android based as I know the apps can sometimes access contact etc but its not.
the only other thing is sim card cloned? has anyone else had this experience or know what the best option is?
I told him to ring back and try to speak to the tech team but cs wouldnt out him through and this new cs rep said there is no way the fb thing could happen as the o2 network is un hackable... I bet thats what sony thought.

Anyways any help or info appreciated

Has your friend downloaded any apps recently that could have sent the message?
Messages sent via an app. will not always appear in an outbox.
This is more likely than the network being hacked.

also there is plenty of dodgy software out there that will send a text as if its come from another number - in the same way you can with an email.

Its not a hacked network - theres a difference between stealing credit card numbers and spamming people.

Was the message inviting the recipient to go to a web address or reply?

Its likely that its just a 'friend' spoofing the number so it appears to come from him. And if he is on facebook with his contacts synced, it will be easy to see the phone numbers.

So I don't think your friend was being fobbed off by O2.

It's quite easy to send a text message on behalf of someone else by spoofing their number from the internet. Great for annoying your mates.....maybe one of your friends didn't recognize the name of his granddad and thought the number was one of his other mates with the same name.

  • No it my friends partners mobile she only uses it to access facebook. Thats all she uses the net for. Forgot to mention that o2 said theh can see the tx has been sent from her mobile but shes hasnt actually sent it so it not been sent from a internet site you can send tx from. Her dad has also recieved the same tx. It isnt a spam tx just a dirty explicit tx.

I had a similar situation some years ago, someone sent a text to someone else which looked like it had come from mine - it hadn't, after hours of searching on the net and using the O2 forum I found out that it was possible to do this by using the net, then I tried it out to see if it worked and it did. But I was lucky, O2 could confirm it hadn't come from my sim card and someone was using my number over the net, but O2 could only go further in the investigation if I contacted the police, which I did. But I never found out 100% who did it, all I could do was prove it wasn't me or my phone. Have you tried asking on the O2 forum? If it wasn't for those on there I would have had no idea about all the scams that can be done with your phone/number etc.,

  • I'm getting that right now with my wife's phone, O2 said it was texts from the daily star or similar. Spent 45 min on phone last night before getting cut off, spent 30 minutes this morning, senior customer care would not talk to me, line manager would not talk to me.
Anyone got the e-mail contact for CEo of o2, or even the end address of e-mail, I have a name, but they refuse to give e-mail details.
    Thanks in advance

I think you are talking about something different, texts from the Daily Star. Are they premium texts? If so the correct organisation to lodge a complaint is phonepayplus.org.uk (the regulator ). If a marketing text then the Office of the information commissioner.

The O2 Complaint Review Service email is on the O2 website and also in your paperwork. Also see the moneysavingexpert articles in effective complaints.

So there's no way it could be something like this then?

I don't know what else do suggest - factory reset the phone (remove all apps) and make sure it's got a secure PIN / lock on it..?
