Deed Poll - name change

Comments

  • My DD changed her surname by Deed Poll when she was 17. I wrote the Deed Poll myself and had her sign it and a neighbour witnessed it. As she was under 18 both her and her father had to write accompanying letter of permission. We changed her passport first as we knew if it was accepted there, then there wouldn't be a problem elsewhere.

I'd save the money and do it yourself.

busiscoming I think if you add the cost of ink and paper, and the risk of it being questioned, not refused just questioned, at less than £20 including copies is it worth it? If you can't afford £20 then you must have a very driving reason to do it.

But as I said earlier my brother takes great delight in fighting officialdom so I will put it to him ;)
I believe past performance is a good guide to future performance

Why would all these people want to change their names anyway? Makes sense if you're getting married but a waste of time otherwise.

I can only answer to why we changed DD's ( and mine at one point)
My DD was born during my first violent marriage, I subsequently left when she was very young. I fell pregnant by new partner, twins due just before her 3rd birthday. At this point DD & I had my married surname. New Partner refused to allow his twins to have my married surname (fair enough)
But I wanted all my children to have the same surname (old fashioned in this day and age I know) I approached my ex and asked if DD could have my new partners name. He also refused. I did ask a solicitor, but was warned it could prove costly if Ex fought the change. And if it went to court judge wouldn't approve as the twins dad and I wasn't married.
The compromise everyone agreed to, was twins registered in my maiden name while DD & I deed polled to maiden name. Youngest son was also registered in my maiden name.

However when the boys dad and I married when DD was 8. I approached Ex and asked him again could we please change it to my married name, this time he agreed. The 3 boys were simply reregistered to reflect their father and I had married legitimising their births ( registars words) We now all have my married surname, and have had for last 10 yrs.

So when/if DD marries she'll be on her fourth surname LOL
  • I did it for free recently. I got married so my surname was changing, so I thought "what the hell" and decided to change my much-disliked first name at the same time. I used a free wording from the internet, printed it on nice paper, and got two witnesses.

The next thing was to apply for a new passport - mine had expired so it was going to cost me anyway, but in this sense I guess my name change wasn't "free" as I had to pay the fee for the new one. I sent the statutory declaration too, and got a nice new digital passport and the stat dec returned. I then went for a new driving licence - this was free - and there's a box you can fill in where you put your digital passport number and they can confirm your identity that way, no documents needed. Brilliant.

Then I went into the bank and they photocopied my stat dec and I recieved a new bank card and chequebook.

Last week I filled in the forms on the HMRC website and got a confirmatory email today - I didn't send any documents. I think I am very trackable, with the digital passport. It's easy to find me and it's obvious who I was, and who I am, so officialdom don't seem to have any problems with it.

Utility bills I managed to change online. Council tax I went in and they copied my stat dec.

It's all straightforward and shouldn't cost you. The stat dec wording I used is available here http://www.gorge.org/experiences/deedpoll.shtml

This got dragged up again did it? I was just reading through this again, not realising that it was from years ago and I came across the post asking why anyone would bother, didn't notice the names on the posts and thought that whoever asked "why bother" was talking sense and then realised it was me that said it.

Anyway, seems like unless you're getting married then it's just for vanity. My advice is to find a job or a hobby because you people clearly have too much time on your hands. Unless you have the same name as some well known !!!!! and then changing your name might be somethinng to consider.
