Deed Poll - name change

2

Comments

  • My (now) wife had her first name changed when she was quite young. I`ve only known her by her current name. What I would say is that on the deed poll itself there is a section for a witness to sign and it needs ocupation etc.

I would use a solicitor for this, they will also stamp it and you should probably get one of their business cards. We got married in Cyprus in June, the original deed poll was`nt witnessed by a solicitor and it needed to be to get married abroad so we had to get it all re-done. Nightmare!

I`m not suggesting your Bro will get married abroad, just that you should use a solicitor as the witness because if you don`t you may regret it in the future. They only charged £5 to sign/stamp it etc!

My DD was done by solicitor and we hold the orginal name change documents plus a couple of certified copies ( to be sent if need be, so orginal doesn't get lost) when she applies for anything, she shows her birth cert and the deeds and has never had any problems. In fact her name has been changed twice, bith time by deed poll. The only slight issue we had was with her passport as they wanted both deed certs, so the one changing her surname A to B as well as the most recent one saying she had been known as A was now known as B but from hereforth would be known as C. But we simply sent it off. Held the application up but no other problems.

And I thought a correctly issued birth cert could not be changed???
For example DD was issued correctly, showing both mine and her dads details. So there fore cant be chnaged.
However my 3 boys certs were reissued, due the fact OH and I married after registering. So their certs were reissused showing legitimised births and it also changed their surname to OH's

Many thanks one and all

In my brothers case I will do the necessary on the web for him and with copies £20 seems fair enough when he thought £47 was as cheap as it gets.

He will not use a passport so for him it only applies to land registration for the house, banks, shares, DVLA, HMRC for pension, and NHS - plus odds & s**s.

Once the DVLA do there stuff he will have a new name photo ID which I guess could be important.

LudaMusser as the deeds of the house are held by a solicitor I suspect we can get him to do the Deed Poll and transfer of house deeds all in one go.

As always if you want to know ask here :T
I believe past performance is a good guide to future performance
  • Why would all these people want to change their names anyway? Makes sense if you're getting married but a waste of time otherwise.

I changed my name by deed poll. Was the cheaper option to getting married and now everyone assumes im married anyway:rotfl:

I also changed my middle name at the same time as it was the same as my mother in laws and it felt weird saying her name as well as mine when stating my whole name...plus Jane is boring anyway :P

I changed everything no problem and have currently sent off for a renewal of a passport so am hoping this will go through ok, i changed it with HRMC too, no problems.

The only place thats a nightmare is if you own land/property changing it with them, i still haven't changed it with the land registry as they want me to go for an interview :O and i havent time...must sort it tho..

Legally, though, you're not married. To protect yourselves you need to make wills, register each other as next of kin for medical purposes, etc.

My Deed poll cost around £40, and then I think I bought around 8 - 10 legal archives which is basically a copy of the deed poll signed by a solicitor, which I was able to send out whilst letting doctors/dentists/colleges/etc know of my name change. The legal archives cost £13 I think.

It's all above board, and my passport/driving licence have been changed. I used this website... http://www.ukdps.co.uk/

Oh just to say aswell, I only changed my first name. The only problem I've had with it is that when I went to A&E the other day my records came up under my old name, because I guess I didn't know how to get in touch with them to tell them (and how would you know who to tell?). But everything else was simple. Also, just to state my passport had ran out which was why I'd changed my name at the time I Did, because if you change your name and then have to change the name on your passport whilst it's still current, you have to pay and extra cost.

Yes, I didn't word that well. Perhaps I should say they will correspond with you etc using a new name, But your real name remains on their records for all time. At least that was how it was explained to me.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

I changed my surname by deed poll in the nineties. it cost £50 and was all done by a solicitor.
My one problem was I was pregnant and the hospital refused to change their name record mid term because of health risks, so my son was born with my previous married name.
When I married my name on the short cert was my newly chosen name (same as my partners)
