I've obviously upset you a bit, babyemily, which wasn't my intention. But I honestly don't know what you're hoping to achieve. If you don't want help, why are you posting? As you've already seen by the responses on facebook, telling this story to a bunch of strangers can elicit upsetting comments, e.g. that this woman's a chav. So what's the point?

As far as I can tell it's a specific incident that none of us can comment on because we weren't there so the only real purpose of posting about it at all seems to be 'something bad happened to someone I know'. Well, bad things happen every day. I simply don't understand why people feel the need to share this kind of stuff, particularly when they get upset at the (inevitable) negative comments.

    A's child is misbehaving
B is grumpy and picks a fight
    Waitrose try to calm things
A is non-white so assumes the fight is racially motivated (there is no mention of calling the kid anything other than an animal, I have a hunch we'd have heard all about it if racial slurs had been used)
A calls police (a disproportionate response?)
A wants Waitrose to grovel (an irrelevant response)
A lobbies SEN and others - how proportionate is that response? Not very

    I agree. I'd also add:

C posts about it on the internet only serving to turn a distressing incident into an hysterical one.

    Agreed.

I imagine the story has become somewhat embellished and changed as time has gone on, too.

  • Hi all, sorry to jump on here ,,, I am related to child,,, this is NOT Racially motivated,, a Law came into force a few years ( sorry can not remember excatly)) protecting disabled, Gay rights and The elderly against such attacks... This is what happened mum and child were sat having a drink , ( the boy has Autism so makes some noises ) the lady went over to their table and requested for mom to keep her animal under control , mom requested for the lady to reseat herself,, which she then called her scum,, ( Mum is a primary school teacher not a chav) ,, Mum asked for management to assist , by this time the lady was shouting and demanding a free cup of coffeeand rally others , The managment asked mum to phone police off site, After mum left the management sat with the lady who said sorry " she just wanted a drink in peace" This a Hate crime, but this is an issue where the wrong decision was made and the meeting held 4 days later was not handled at all well , so hopefully the next will resolve all of this .. as the little boy is upset ,, also other people praised mum in her handling of this situation,, I and her friends will not be posting anymore whilst this is going on, I had to this time to put the facts right , thank you for reading x

Do you mean: "This not a Hate crime"?

It's really quite hard to tell because you have offered no evidence that it was and the fact that you next clause begins 'but' rather indicates you think it is not.

Obviously it's hard to tell what's in someone's mind and it's quite possible to imagine that a racist would smile indulgently at a noisy white child whilst making a fuss about similar behaviour in one they consider 'foreign'.
