Copying music

Hi Im new to this internet stuff and just wondered if I have purchased a cd is it legal for me to make copy for my own personal use?

Can I copy songs I have purchased from Itunes to a cd?

What about copying podcasts to a cd as they are free anyway?

Thanks:confused:

The BPI supports the use personal ripping of cds for personal use and the IPPR has made recommendations to the government to that effect. Noone will ever prosecute for it but under current copyright law it is still ILLEGAL to rip cds to mp3 for personal use. http://www.ippr.org.uk/pressreleases/?id=2404

You are allowed to copy itunes purchased songs to cd as it is within the license agreement but the number of times depends on the license. There may be specific licence restrictions for podcasts but I think in general they come under timeshifted recording and how long you can keep them is debatable but I think most podcast makers would allow permanent copies.

It is likely the law on copying for personal use will be changed within a couple of years anyway, but it's not like you'd ever get caught. Even if you did, I don't think any court in the country would hear the case.

Exactly, the BPI themselves (who would most likely be the organisation to prosecute) want the and say they will definitely NOT prosecute anyone for ripping cds. It's simply a case of the law not caught up with technology yet.

Sensible to do, it is interesting to note that making a personal backup of a software program is perfectly legal as it is given specific exemption in the copyright act 1988. Making a personal copy of a software application (so long as you aren't circumventing copy protection mechanisms) is the only case in the law where you are allowed to make a copy/transfer between media without the copyright owner's permission.

Price and license are not necessarily related. Copyright owners are free to apply whatever limits on distribution they want.
