Will this work?
OH currently has a phone on Orange and is due for an upgrade, OH does nothing but use the phone to talk, no internet/text/camera etc.
Son wants an Android phone for Xmas, he is currently on Orange PAYG so was planning to give him the upgrade for Xmas and OH keep his current no frills phone. Son currently has a 6 month bundle which tops up each month, so once this finishes was thinking that I could possibly unlock the phone and switch my son on to GifGaf and their PAYG tariff seems much more reasonable - will I be able to do this.
However, have Virgin Media TV/Landline/Broadband and they have just phoned and offered me a Samsung Galaxy Ace for £11.50 a month with 1000 minutes, plus text, internet & free calls from home phone. Which seems like a really good deal to me.
So now I want to know, if I take up the VM offer, and cancel OH's contract with Orange and get a pac code, can he then put the new sim which will come from VM in his unlocked no frills phone and keep his number and then get the Samsung Galaxy Ace unlocked even though its never been used and set up with a GifGaf sim on a £10 per month goody bag? Also are GifGaf reliable never heard of them before this reading about them on this board?
I have not spoken with Orange about upgrade offers yet, but their advertised tariffs look quite expensive currently.
All advice appreciated, not too clever with all this stuff. Thanks

I don't see any problems, but it is not very wise to use a no-frills phone on a contract with internet (how much internet?) and pay for internet at Orange. So now I want to know, if I take up the VM offer, and cancel OH's contract with Orange and get a pac code, can he then put the new sim which will come from VM in his unlocked no frills phone and keep his number
Unlocking is likely to cost: http://giffgaff.com/unlock/Samsung-Galaxy-Ace-phoneand then get the Samsung Galaxy Ace unlocked even though its never been used and set up with a GifGaf sim on a £10 per month goody bag?
They are reliable. Loads of information on this board. Just search. Also are GifGaf reliable never heard of them before this reading about them on this board?0 -
Thanks for your response.
I don't mind paying for the phone to be unlocked if its only going to be in the region of £20 as the link suggests.
Orange haven't offered a deal yet, the VM deal was 1000 mins, 500mb & texts plus the phone, really I just want the phone so I can pass it on to my son for Xmas, I haven't seen an offer cheaper than £11.50 a month for this amount of minutes, including the phone, not worried that the internet won't be used, still cheaper than any other offer, I've seen. The amount of minutes and the price is perfect for OH.
Just wanted to make sure that I could get the phone unlocked straight away and that the gifgaf sim could be used. My son is not at an age where I would trust him with a contract and the Gifgaf Goody bag is very competitive with the unlimited internet & texts.
Currently they are both on Orange so was going to keep them on there so could just swap sims, but gifgaf is so much cheaper.:hello:0 -
Sensible plan OP. I can't see any reason why this wouldn't be a good idea, I say go for it!Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).
