Where to holiday in Suffolk?

Options
We are thinking of a week's holiday in the summer in Suffolk- not sure about whether we will camp or do self-catering, but not bothered at this point. Trouble is, we do not know the county at all (which is why we want to go) and need some ideas.
We just want to know some recommendations for where to go (it's a big county). Someone has said Lavenham is pretty. We like beach and countryside walks, small villages and towns, local markets and welcoming pubs!
Anyone got any recommendations?
Thanks in advance!

We stayed at a great campsite in Saxmundham (http://www.carltonpark.info/) - the town itself isn't the prettiest in Suffolk, but it is handy for the rest of the County including Aldeburgh and Southwold where there are walks and pubs aplenty.

Southwold is one of my favourite places in the country, it's like going back in a time warp. Probably not very cheap in the height of summer.

If you can't afford to stay there, try to visit for a day.

Orford is also very nice and has a couple of good pubs for eating and is near Sutton Hoo and Rendlesham forest. I think there is camping at the Jolly Sailor pub.

I love Aldeburgh, it has a good selection of shops and some lovely places to eat (many with fresh fish straight from the fishermen's huts on the beach), along with a couple of renowned chip shops which in the summer have continual queues due to their popularity.

There is a caravan site one minute from the beach, but I'm not sure if they allow tents.

There is a decent camping place at Walberswick just across the river from Southwold - you can get a little one man ferry across or walk upriver and cross to Southwold that way. Orford, Dunwich, Aldeburgh are within easy reach of the site and worth visiting.

Lavenham itself is nice but personally I'd go for the coast.

Oh and it's as safe as most places and a lot safer than some :)

We went in August and both Southwold and Aldeburgh were very quiet. We were very impressed we could drive onto the sea front, park up and leave the car all day for without paying a penny. I always have a load of change for car parking, but in Suffolk the small amount we used was in the supermarket in Saxmundham. A week's camping was £100 with no further charges for showers etc.

Can also recommend Aldeburgh, Snape, Saxmundham, Thropeness.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
  • you could camp at Kessingland which would be alot cheaper than Southwold and Aldeburgh etc (They are more expensive due to being celibrity holiday home areas).

With Kessingland you are in driving distance of Lowestoft,Southwold,Aldeburgh and Great Yarmouth etc

    Some of the attractions are

    Pleasurewood Hills- Lowestoft
    Pleasure Beach - Great Yarmouth
    Golden mile - Great Yarmouth
    Crabbing at Walberswick

are to name a few, I live in Suffolk and would say it is a lovely area which is missed by many

Thanks to everyone who have taken the time to reply - I'm getting a clearer idea now of where to head for! And like you mightyroyals I think it's somewhere I should visit- I am not a very seasoned traveller abroad, but there are so many counties in Britain that I've never seen!
