I've never used Roboform, just Adblock+ and noscript, and uninstalling those 2 makes no difference.

If it works well on a netbook, then I'm at a complete loss.......!

    Firefox obviously doesn't like me:D

Yes I was. Sorry I should have quoted. Only one more thing comes to mind but it sounds like you might have tried it already. Just a possibility but I'm just wondering if it could be anything to do with the hardware acceleration introduced in recent Firefox versions? I don't know if you might have tried turning it off.

This caused text rendering problems for me and it was reckoned some graphics cards were the cause. The problem has gone since further Firefox releases and a graphics card driver update. Probably totally off-track but maybe worth a shot if not already tried. 'Options > Advanced > General (tab) > Use hardware acceleration when available'

Hard to describe how scrolling looks for me. Not exactly very smooth I'd say but not jumpy enough to be annoying.

    Yeah I have tried it.:)
It is off anyway. The Firefox message in troubleshooting information says "Blocked for your graphics driver version. Try updating your graphics driver to version 8.15.10.2202 or newer." Since I can't update I guess I'll never know for sure whether it would help.

Your description of scrolling is interesting. I agree it is hard to describe accurately, but it could just be that I am just more sensitive to it than most, so that a show stopper for me goes completely unnoticed by others.

I just checked my release - it was 7.0.1 but when I checked it downloaded the update. 7.0.1 was working well on my puny Atom based netbook but I did slip in an extra GB of RAM making it 2GB and it is XP based. As it's only just on 8 the only thing I noticed was it disables third party installed extensions (in my case .net and java console with I just let perish as I've no idea what they do).

I recently upgraded a low-end 4 year old core duo desktop (originally Vista but upgraded to Win 7) to an I5 machine and was amazed how much slicker FF seemed on it compared to the old desktop.

As a web developer, testing sites in Firefox is getting harder with every new interation of this product.. often updates are killing my add-ons, have to wait for new versions -.- Sticking to Chrome ..

Just add a new Boolean entry to about:config called extensions.checkCompatibility.[FF version here] and set it's value to false. E.g. for FF8 you'd have extensions.checkCompatibility.8.0 = false.
This disables add-on compatibility checking and lets you continue to use your add-ons.

ive been using an older version of FF and updated to the new version today and i see that the tool bars (if thats what u call it and the bar at the bottom of of your screen disapear so it basically leaves a full screen of the webpage you are on. looked on ff abd i think it said this is the norm. is that correct?
  • Talk about coincidence:D
It's possible somebody on Wilders may have just given me the reason for my scrolling problem.
    It's a thread about FF8 crashing.
Turning off hardware acceleration was suggested and his reply said "Scrolling sure is a lot more jerky with it off."
So that goes back to the top of the list for now.
Thanks xxJackxx who ever you are.

    Yes, correct.
Click the Firefox button and hover over options to get some back if you need them.
Some, notably the add on bar, do not have the same content as older versions.

thanks andrew. ive moved over to chrome as i dont like the new FF at all. frankly it scared me when i first turned the comp on. i wondered what had happened!! chromes alot faster aswell
  • Mine initially said it would disable Kaspersky virtual keyboard and URL checker, however when I rebooted, it asked if I wanted to renable them. All worked fine.

The only addon that wouldn't work was the Skype one. Not fussed.

All in all, Firefox still my browser of choice.

I look in on Wilders quite regularly. A good forum. Did turning on hardware acceleration make a difference to the scrolling?
