Help ! No hot water or heating and 12 week old babies in the house

Does anyone have any suggestions ? We have 12 week old twins in the house and my glowworm compact boiler has packed up, we've had no heating or hot water for over a fortnight, I have had three independent engineers say that the boiler is beyond economical repair, I own the house and have unfortunately had to take a minimum wage job due to redundancy last year; meaning that paying to have the boiler replaced is just not on option. I have been in touch with the local council who cannot help, citizens advice who don't have any advice ? We have been declined a crisis loan, declined an application for the warm front scheme and been given no alternatives ??? I am on a low income and we are in receipt of Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Child Benefit. What the hell do we do ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.....

I'm pretty sure that British Gas will want to confirm that everything is initially in good working order before they accept you as a customer though, otherwise everyone would just wait to sign up when something went wrong...

.. and even if you could sign up, the homecare plan it won't cover a new boiler, which from the sound of it is what is needed.

sorry this is not of more help :-(

You could try ringing Glow worm see if they do a fixed price repair.

    http://www.glow-wormheating.co.uk/after-sales/existing.php

Meanwhile you could buy a cheap electric convector to provide emergency heat. Try Tesco.

    Buy an electric heater?
Boil a kettle for hot water?

How are 12 week old babies relevant?

How did the human race survive the million odd years before the invention of boilers?

Did not want to read and run.
Both myself and oh managed for a couple of months whilst waiting for new boiler with an electric oil filled radiator bought from somewhere like Robert Dyas, we used this to warm the bedroom. Downstairs we got the open fire place back into use (was swept) and used coal/wood. Hot water was via the kettle. It was difficult but we managed.
I presume you have no immersion heater for water, not sure if worth mentioning but if you really cant afford to replace boiler could you do the above and maybe get a cheap electric shower fitted so that at least you could have some warm water in the bathroom.
Know how expensive boilers are sorry you are having troubles esp with having your LO's

I'd go along with joining the British Gas scheme - it will cover for repairs or replacement if the boiler is beyond repair and less than 7 years old

Join it, and wait a week or two though, then say you've just switched the boiler on and it does not work

But do check the scheme small print though to make sure that you don't have to wait a set time before calling them out

Obviously you may need a little fib if it comes to saying that it was working when you joined the scheme, but hey-ho, you're desperate and lots of people do it

GlowcWorm do a fixed price repair for about £300. BG do a fixed price repair for about £170-£200.

What has actually gone wrong with it?
