Well Which Online? still rate Bosch as being in the top tier of most reliable manufacturers for washing machines. Everyone that I know swears by Bosch reliability. In fact my whole house is full of only Bosch appliances and products.

Country of manufacture doesn't come into it, quality control does. Just look at Seat and Skoda since VW took over.

Bosch have been getting a lot of their products made overseas (from Germany) for a long time, which in no way has dented their reputation. I remember getting a Bosch cordless screw driver years ago that had been manufactured in Mexico.

I suppose I could've opted for an Indesit, Servis or Candy machine at half the price...erm, nah thanks.

Uh!Um! if you buy a new Bosch you won't be buying a German m/c they are made in Spain now and are just as cheap and nasty as most of the rest and their servicing side went bust so you won't get a Bosch engineer.

Uh! Um! I have just received my very nice new Bosch washing machine and on closer inspection can see it's made in Germany. I have also just registered with Bosch for my 2 year warranty who assure me that genuine Bosch engineers service their products.

All that and £100 cheaper then the high street courtesy of COOP Electrical Shop http://www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk
  • Personally I wouldn't touch Indesit with a barge pole. Had a fridge freezer years ago and had recurring faults from day 1. The best was when I put my fresh turkey in the fridge on Xmas eve and found it frozen on Xmas morn!!

My friend had an Indesit washer and thought it was normal to have washers repaired twice a year - and they had no kids. Another friend had their dishwasher and it went wrong every year.

After Mr TM's Hotpoint (Yuk) went, I went the whole hog and bought Miele. Fantastic. Best washer I've used, and should last forever (touch wood) Only wish I could have afforded Miele dishwasher.
  • Hotpoint Indesit Company Fridge Freezer is the worst product I have ever bought in my life and there customer service team is the worst team I have ever dealt with. I bought FF187 Fridge freezer (£340) in dec 2006 it stopped working after 3 days... they had to replace it after 18 days, i didn’t ever get an apology for all the food which spoiled, over that we had to live without fridge for 18 days, it is an horrible experience.
To make things worst it stopped working after 1½ years. When I called them back they wanted me to pay £140 for the callout charges, when I asked about the guarantee of the product, they say there is no guarantee. The horrible thing is the customer service team is so horrible, you have to wait for at least 15 mins on the 087 premium number and every one I spoke to have a big attitude problem. They are not willing to help at all. I don’t blame them they might be getting hundreds of calls every day having sold such an unreliable products.
I got a call back from them only after sending an e-mail to the CEO of the company and they offered me to get it fixed for £75.
I have never seen such an unreliable product in my life with such a crap customer service and they are not cheap.
I would by nor suggest any product from Hotpoint or Indesit Company.

dont know why you all bother with extended warranties, when new machines can be bought for 150 quid these days.
    ps
weve had many indesit items and no real problems at all.
hotpoint & hoover are another matter though. waste of time.
    Get some gorm.
  • just shows you how much luck comes into it. hoover are the best of the mainstream brands, hotpoint and indesit are exactly the same machine, so are ariston. they are just names, the company that makes them is called merloni, they also make creda and cannon. if you buy a hotpoint you get an indesit and an ariston, etc etc, there are absolutely no differences in parts at all, they are all built to be equally rubbish, unfortunately

Sorry folks, there's a lot of misinformation on this thread about who makes what as well as a lot of accurate stuff.

Hoover are owned by Candy, it has never been a British company, ever.

Hotpoint is a mere brand name now owned by The Indesit Company.

I wrote this article which explains who owns who for the bigger companies in the industry. I expect a lot of people will be shocked to find that their "German" AEG is actually a Zanussi in a skirt or that their "German" Bosch may actually have been turned out by Balay in Spain or even in China.

If you're wanting to know how I think you're being ripped off and you don't even know it, have a read at The Great Washing Machine Swindle it's not pretty, but how it all seems to work.

Bearings failing in such young machines is not a symptom of everything being crap at all, it's a symptom of people not wanting to pay for quality products, pure and simple. If you want good appliances that will last you can get them, but not for £200, less than the cost of a Dyson vacuum cleaner. What do you expect you'll get? I'm sorry if that seems harsh, but it's true and Indesit/Hotpoint/Hoover are just cheap junk built to a price.

That said, bearings are failing earlier as the cost cutting continues to meet people's demands for cheaper machines and, it gets better, a lot of them now seal the tanks as well so you have to replace the entire tub and drum unit! It's madness, but it's already out there and we're writing off machines at under 18 months old on a regular basis, there's more on it here

Are they fit for purpose? Legally they are I'm afraid as no consumer legislation I am aware of offers a guarantee of durability, only that it will work. Remember that the manufacturer's warranty is over and above your statutory rights and generally affords you more protection, not less.

But essentially, if you buy cheap, you get cheap.

I'll get off my soapbox now. :D

  • Htpoint and Indesit are unfortunately the same product now. Most of the washing machines are made in Italy and fridges in turkey. Some dishwashers are made in CHina. Indesit are gradualy one by one closing UK factories at the rate of one per year. We have Kinmel park and Yate open but for how long. Peterborough and Blythe Bridge have already been closed.

The company are greedy and I believe that we should boycot any company that does not manufacture in the UK. Dyson has moved its manufacturing abroad but has not reduced the price of its products. The reputation of Dyson is false and the products are not as reliable as their reputation.

One local independent repairer said that without Dyson cleaners he would go out of business.

My advice to anyone is if you cant find a product that is manufactured in the UK . Then buy the cheapest you can find and throw it away when it fails. Spare parts are too expensive and the marke up on a £20 pump is £19.50 as th pums only cost the manufacturer 50p. I know I am an engineer.
