Indesit Washing Machine

Can anyone help with the problems I am encountering with Comet & Indesit.
I purchased a Indesit Washer from Comet in 2002 without an extended warrant. 2003 the Bearings became faulty & were replaced by a Comet Engineer. The same problem has occured again and I have been left with estimated repair bill of £130 plus a bundle of damaged Laundry.
Comet & Indesit both refuse to accept liability although the probably has obviously been caused by a Fault and not by normal wear & tear. My last Indesit Washer lasted me over 10 years and 2 babies!! Trading Standards have said it would be very hard to prove that the fault was present at purchase and advise I just buy a new one!!
I didnt think you would expect to have major repairs done to a Washing Machine every year?
Anymore advice before I decide to go & sit on the washing machine outside my local Comet????????????

hi there
not sure if this helps any:
but i bought an Ariston (same as Indesit) from Currys and exactly a year later (within days) the bearings went in the drum !
luckily i did buy the warranty (sorry i know that doesnt help) - but it does seem a little strange...
also - these "bearings" are parts they carry on the van at all times - i dont think they are made to last.....
if i were u i would threaten with watchdog etc, n tell them u hav details of someone whose machine had same prob exactly a year later etc etc, (if u mail me u can hav my details to giv them)
am sure they wont want the adverse publicity - n stick to your guns !
good luck

I bought an indesit in 1989 and it lasted til about 1997ish we had 4 kids so it did a lot of washing, I'd fitted the odd pump and minor repairs but I thought we should get a new one. I went for a new indesit, it worked ok for a year then packed in, I knew there was a serious problem with the drum bearings so I decided to just buy a new one. I bought a hotpoint( the model was on watchdog later that year) it had a 2 year parts garantee 1 year part/labour. just before the year was up it was grinding, got them in and they fitted new bearings and said if we'd left it much longer it would have been unrepairable like most of the other machines he been to. He got us to buy some strong anti scale stuff and said calgon was useless. It lasted about another year and it did the same I stripped it down and the bearings and drum shaft were totally shot it.
I bought another indesit, it was on the cheap at currys about £179 that lasted about a year, I bought another cheap one same thing but I managed to make a working machine from 2 duff one's, it is still in the garage. About a 1.5 years ago I bought an LG 7kg load machine and so far so good, it is the machine that is direct drive no belts.
You may be thinking I should have got the extra warranties or pushed for the machines to be repaired but when you have 6 to launder for and it takes them 3 days to come out and then maybe longer to get parts it just isn't worth the hassle, £179 for a years washing was acceptable to me.
The problem is everything is crap these days, old time repair men have said so. The cheap and nasty bearings(which my new machine doesn't have) can't take the grinding effect of the hard water deposits.0 -
it may not help but try constant complaing with the problem ie phoning and letters.
sometimes they get fed up with hearing complaints and just sort the problem out, also threaten them with not using them again and also telling your friends and us etc.0 -
I bought a Indesit W143S UK washing machine from Curries / Comet (can't remember which one - but they're the same anyway) and low and behold, the bearings have gone....
It's a tad under 2 years old - I didn't buy any extended warranty. Got a local washing machine repair man out to it - says its a common problem with Indesits... said not worth the time and trouble repairing it - they will almost certainly go again (the bearings) in just over a year....
He commented that he's sure that the manufacturers deliberetly make 'weak points' in washers to a) push extended warranties out to consumers and b) ensure a healthy washing machine market continues were the average household will buy a new washing machine every 3-4 years....
It's all a shame if you ask me. I will NEVER buy an Indesit ANYTHING again.
Got a top of the range hotpoint now - the old hand repair guy said hotpoint or hoover are amongst the most reliable these days.... I know of a guy who's had a hotpoint for over 20 years without as much as a pump failure........ and although I don't usually bother with extended warranties (I view them as a waste of money) I did take one out on the new hotpoint - for £170 for 5 years it'll save me buying a new washer again 2 or 3 years from now if this hotpoint goes the same way.
I am certainly going to write to Indesit and voice my complaints - after all, it is reasonable to expect a mid range washing machine to function correctly for 4-5 years or so, wouldn't you agree? You certainly don't expect it to last just 2 years, with a fault that works out 'cheaper' in buying a complete new washing machine.0 -
Comet have agreed they will fix the problem without charging Labour but I will have to pay the cost of the part at £138.25!! Yet 2 independant engineers have quoted me £125 inc Labour & Parts???
Despite standing outside Comet all night advising People not to purchase Washing Machines, I still havent got the problem resolved.
But Im still on with it and will carry on emailing, ringing, faxing etc Comet0 -
Get a quote for the part and send to them and say you agree to pay that price not theirs.............the part obviously doesn't cost that...............keep on at them , you'll get there ;D0

Excellent news !!!
Well done

I had a Zanussi which needed new bearings at least once (amongst numerous other parts and faults), with the first bearings being fitted within about 18 months.
All the afore mentioned machines seem to be Italian, which would seem to indicate substandard parts and build quality being underlying.
My Bosch has just given up after 6 years and has never had one new part fitted. Looks like another Bosch is waiting in the wings.0 -
Uh!Um! if you buy a new Bosch you won't be buying a German m/c they are made in Spain now and are just as cheap and nasty as most of the rest and their servicing side went bust so you won't get a Bosch engineer.
It was good to see howmuch get a good result and thinking about it we could have helped. There should be a Forum on here where members make a complaint eg. to Comet and we all back them up(email) and threaten to boycott there store. When the likes of you and yours or watchdog back people up the stores always back down without admitting they were in the wrong.0
