YOU can make energy pricing fair

Fair energy pricing - YOU really can make a difference.

Should the unit cost of pricing be cheaper the more you use? if you think not the please sign this petition. 100 000 signatures and the government is obliged to discuss it in parliament. Lets have our say, after all we DO live in a democracy so we should express our views.

epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/19449 (go to this page to sign the petition)

For domestic users electricity & gas should NOT be sold at a discounted rate for higher usage. (This is the unit price goes down for domestic users of a higher number of units - First there are a few units that include what used to be called standing charge, then the 'standard' unit price, then after significant usage the unit charge then goes down, why?)

If higher users pay less the normal users like you and I pay more! how can that be fair? Lets reduce out bills via this partition.

Sorry the links do not work but MoneySavingExpert does not let me as a new user to have links in my post :(. I know with links it would be easier.

Thank you for reading and considering this government petition.

Bit short sighted. The tiered pricing simply replaces a standing charge. Abolish the tiers and we'll all go back to paying a standing charge regardless of how little we use.
Just my opinion, but I won't be signing.

Unless the standing charge is simply redistributed on the basis of kWh used.

The energy market is not a monopoly. The best way to ensure the fairest prices is to choose the fairest tariff.

For me, the "fairest" pricing is one where the first "block" of energy units are more expensive than subsequent ones. Why? Because over the year my bills are cheaper than if I chose a tariff with fixed unit pricing. Simple economics: it's the total amount paid that is of relevance, not the mathematical equation that is used to calculate the total amount.

If you would prefer to spend more money on energy, but at a flat rate, then why not vote with your feet and move to a different provider/tariff? Or are there no tariffs at all that fit your criterion?

Do you think a petition will help. Its just Camerons version of what Labour did when they were in power, a petition will do nothing as did the one a few weeks back which had over a million signatures to have a referendum for being in EU. Waste of time and effort they dont listen
  • I am not concerned about the drop in price after first few units that include what used to be called standing charge.

After these few unit the 'standard' unit price,

then after significant usage the unit charge then goes down, this is the drop that I feel is wrong and the petition is designed to question.

I hope this clarifies the aim of the petition.

Then I have no idea what you're talking about, so still wouldn't sign. No tariff I've ever been on had a third level of charging.

    I don't get it.

If I buy stuff in quantity I expect to get it cheaper the more I buy.

Do you think companies that are using huge amounts of energy would be happy paying the same as a guy in a 1 bed flat. I think not.

Im only charged at the high rate for 900Kwh of elec, and 2680Kwh of gas per year.

For me, thats about 2 months of useage on elec and about 2 on gas. Therefor, it benefits me largely to have it this way along with the majority of the country!

If u swapped the rates about, my bill would more than double !

About 5% of the population use 900kwh elec or 2680 gas or less per year. So what ur saying, is the majority of the country pays more, so you can save a few bucks? get a grip!

there isnt a company in the world, no matter the product that charges you more, the more you buy. In every business the more u buy, the better ur discounts are...and thats the way it should be!

Ill go sign, so that ur bill can go from £20 per month to £13, where as the rest of us will go into the multiple hundreds?

    get a life!

I think Mr Fraser wants to replace bogofs with 'buy one get 1 double price', or if you buy wine by the case, you get a 5% surcharge, or 'kids go free' offers replaced by 'kids go for twice the price'.

I suspect he is a low energy user who doesn't want to contribute fairly to the fixed overhead costs incurred in delivering his energy, which is what tier one/the standing charge pays for.
  • I can see the point people are making about the thresholds, really I can, but I doubt it would make much difference if they were abolished tomorrow. It strikes me as some sort of smart point people like to make which really doesn't affect much at all. For the normal user the thresholds tend to be so low that everybody uses more than the threshold and thus gets on to the lower rate. Those who struggle who are close to the threshold would I wager be struggling to afford the bills anyway and are the sort of people help is usually targeted to (vulnerable people and/or those on a low income).
