I worked since I was 16 and was only able to get 6 months JSA at the age of nearly 40 ( redundancy left me jobless) so no, life aint fair and benefits aint fair.
You live with someone as a partner and they then become responsible for you, that is how it goes and as has already been said how it has always gone.
I (female) worked when my husband was out of work and supported our household and that was without any benefits as I was earning over the limit for assistance. We struggled and still do but that again is life I am afraid, it rarely gets better and it does bring you closer together.
Hubby and I have been so broke we had to choose between dog food and eating ourselves ( the dog won) but we are now able to cope with anything and 14 years later are still going strong.
All I can suggest is that you do what the rest of us have to do and breath in, add another notch to the belt and find a way of making what you have stretch far enough.
Sorry and good luck with the jobThere is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.
