Thanks gallygirl! When I joined her that's about what I had. TBH not a great deal more now, and my biggest regret is that I didn't know about overpaying a mortgage years ago, and how even small amounts have big effects.
DH and I both in our 50s (never thought we would still have a mortgage, but that's life) we did start OP and not dropping payments when interest rates dropped only a few years ago. Luckily 12 months ago it meant that we could get a fixed rate for 5 years (repayment for whole amount including the interest only shortfall) and will have paid it off at the end. The amount we had reduced the mortgage by with our small overpayments meant our monthly payment only increased £20 per month (can't now overpay as there will be penalties for paying off early!) It's the best we could do and we are happy.
DS is almost 2 years into his mortgage. They are on a 2 year fix (needed bit of outgoing security and interest rates low) and are getting married this year. You can rest assured I will be passing on all I have discovered (wish there was this information about 30 years ago) including an overpayment calculator.
Sorry for hijacking thread lulabelle - I will now slip back into the shadows!0 -
Hey Iona - don't slip back in to shadows, hang around and join in the fun - there's some lovely people on this forum and it's nice to chit chat - it helps keep you on track.....0

I'm guessing that all of my fellow MFW's have got snow?
Ours started earlier tis morning and is now coming down fairly thick and fast - it's glorious.
Sadly, we were just about to leave the house to walk to DS1's school to watch his class assembly and school called to say it has been cancelled.
Wish we had gone to the one this morning now.
Makes no sense at all to cancel - they said that they were cancelling to save people from going out in the snow - we have to go out in the snow to collect children from school anyway in an hours time, so it makes no sense at all to me. Very sad to have missed it
DH went and did the shopping last night, so we're all stocked up with no reason to leave the house for a few days.....
We had planned on going out for dinner tonight, but we've decided to cancel and we don't want to drive anywhere in the snow.0 -
Got paid today, sadly for one reason and another it's significantly less than what it should have been. So no decent MOP for me this month..
On the bright side, all of my new savings pots are open, so I had a nice time transferring the monthly amounts in to each of them! I'm sure it is wrong to get such a kick from doing this....0 -
Thanks for inviting me to stay!
Mixed day here - left work early and traffic terrible but DD (works nearby) and I arrived home mid afternoon in one piece. OH also home safe, but son's fiance had a collision with a telegraph pole; she is fine which is the main thing, I am sure there are those much worse off.
Not moneysaving but about to walk to local Harvester for dinner - DD and I were going to Les Mis but got a refund on tickets as not sensible to drive across town to the cinema, so we need a replacement treat.
Well done for opening the accounts lulabbelle, I will watch with interest how you do (no pun intended) I am trying the 'save £1 a day' - how simple is this? ( I spent £1 on a cat 'piggy bank' in a charity shop to keep in the spirit of the challenge)0 -
How's netflicks luls?
I was so excited the other day as I thought I was able to watch the walking dead on the iPad.....turned out it was the WALKING dead:cool: I think I'll go for a back to back WTD session over the weekend at some point through my son's Xbox.February13 - £74990 (or thereabouts)

Enjoy the harvester Iona - definitely makes sense to all rather than drive, not worth the risk. I hope your DH's fianc! is ok......
Netflix is fab Natty - I've watched season one of californication this week. Very rude, but a great program. And, the rude bits are funny more than anything else. Will start watching season 2 tonight. Also planning to start watching the other program that was recommended which I can't remember off the top of my head.
It's stopped snowing here, not sure whether there will be more tonight, I guess we'll know in the morning. I'm hoping for some sledging and snowman building.0 -
DH has impressed me no end this afternoon.... He cooked dinner, cleaned the kitchen, hoovered the house and mopped the downstairs and bathrooms.......
I didn't even have to threaten violence.0 -
