Where to stay in San Francisco?

EDIT: Just had a quick look for 3 nights in June, the Hotel Carlton is available for just over £90 a night. We stayed there 3 years ago and it was fine.
We stay at the Carlton (Sutter Street) in September and would not recomend to anyone. Poor location, noisy and somewhat dangerous location according to the Doorman. Yes it has good rates but the rooms are tatty and you get what you pay for at the end of the day.
I would avoid if I were you.0 -
Don't worry about this as you will see loads of other people in the same situation who just get off and push their cycles a bit.0

I have stayed there twice now-most recent was last November-and we loved it. The staff are very friendly & helpful, the free wine tasting every night was a lovely touch and our room was very nice. Not tatty at all. Ask for a high room to avoid noise (we didn't notice any) and the area isn't dangerous. It's on the edge of the Tenderloin, so just don't walk into that area. Some great places to eat nearby & the bus stop is just a couple of minutes walk away. Cable Car a few blocks if I remember correctly.
I would definitely stay there again.

I stayed at The Chancellor, just off Union Sq, and would highly recommend it. It's very central and has all the home comforts and great customer service. If you want a super-sumptuous environment just pop into any of the grander hotels on either side.
Bear in mind that noise is cited as a problem everywhere in downtown San Fran. Whatever you do avoid the Tenderloin area as although somewhat contained, it is bad news, esp at night...there is a reason that rates there are so much cheaper than other areas.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

It's all about standards, Darling !
All I can say is that I spent 25days touring SF and the Southwest and without doubt the Carlton was the worst hotel. The only eating place anywhere near is a Subway, you have to go to Union Square for anything decent and that is quite a walk late at night.
That's why it's cheap !0 -
I was in San Fran this May and we stayed at the La Luna Inn Lombard Street. Its a little further out (as in its not a 5 min walk to everything), but we managed fine with a combination of walking and taking the bus and trams.
It cost us £287 for 4 nights, booked through expedia. Included breakfast.0
