MOT Notification

My car is due for its 1st MOT in 10 days but I have not received notification of this. I tried to book it in at the garage but they said they needed notification - is this right? I must use this garage as I bought a service card for which includes a free MOT.

Thanks.

You don't get formal notification of an MOT due date, but you can sign up to receive a text message close to when it is due.

I suspect what the garage means is they need more than 10 days notice - they will have a busy workshop, only so many staff to do MOTs and only so many MOT booking slots in a day. There is no MUST about it - you can use anywhere for an MOT, it just means you will have to pay for it.

It IS a must - I am saving money ;). Seriously, I got a great deal from the garage and they have been v good. Will phone back this afternoon when someone else will hopefully answer - it wasn't the normal guy who I spoke to! Thanks.

Your documentation will show you and the garage how old your car is so there should be no question as to whether your car needs an MOT. The above poster is probably correct at his guess as to why you were told this but if not then ask to speak to someone else next time you ring them.

Probably should have booked it in a couple of weeks ago then. The MoT can be carried out up to a month before the due date and its expiry date will still be one year from the due date.

Unfortunately the MoT is one of things you have to take responsibility for sorting out.

If the garage says they need a notification, they must either be talking out of their behinds, or be referring to their own policies and a notification sent out by themselves as part of this promotional deal you have bought. You certainly won't be sent anything by VOSA/the DVLA etc.

You wont be saving money if you get caught driving without an MOT!

If you really do want to wait and use this garage then once the MOT has run out, you'll need to keep the car off road and not drive it again, other than to/from the MOT test.

I know - I knew the car insurance was due on 25th so thought I had another week - forgot about the week's drive away insurance

Sounds much more like a free* MOT** where *=we need a year and 32 days notice, and **=Only available on Easter Sunday

    or am I just cynical
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

I would agree Mark - but not in this case.

£40 got me free labour on a service (parts dear but overall a lot cheaper than Fiat dealer), air con regas, brake check, tyre balance & alignment, brake fluid change & MOT, plus fluids check & winter/summer safety check. I thought they would recoup on 'oh we've noticed you need xxxx'. I was told I needed 2 new tyres (which I knew) plus brake pads & discs, which I also sort of knew. I had a mechanic I know have a look & he agreed (plus they were making that grindy noise ). The price they charged for all that (£378) was over £200 cheaper than the next cheapest quote so overall I'm well chuffed. They're a fairly small local chain which is also good.

Just booked in for 16th so false alarm - thanks for help all :)
