in the last year, my landlord has had to do the following work on the house i'm renting
- new roof, including all soffit boards
- new boiler
- external painting
- internal painting
- repointing rear wall
- new shed
- relaid patio due to frost damage
All sound like long term maintenance jobs which will not require doing for a number of years. Doing them can only at worst improved saleability/rentability and at best will have strongly improved the re-sale value.
I rented my home out when I worked abroad for a year. We had a load of work done on the house and all of it was offset against the rental income. In the end we had no tax to pay on the rental because the work we had done reduced the rental income down to below our personal tax free allowance.
When we came back and sold the house, it went quickly because of the 'free' work we had done on it. Not a bad deal really, plus our tenants were really nice.0 -

Well, yes, maybe on your planet that is the case ....... now, back down to earth - I will sell my house for £xxx,xxx and spend that money having a rather marvellous retirement.

I prefer to look on the differences between home owners, and renters as a modern day class system. People who have more than 1 home and rent out the others are the upper class, those who own a single home are the middle class, and those who rent are the lower classes. Let's not beat about the bush and kid ourselves here, anyone who rents or still lives at mummies while approaching their 30's does not take pleasure from their situation.0

don't think those sums add up somehow unless by free you mean 20% cheaper than normal.0 -
