How can you record off the net..?

Can I record from Youtube or suchlike onto CD or is this illegal/technically impossible in some way? I am looking to record for my own use only.

  • There's the Youtube to MP3 add-on for Firefox.

Alternatively you can use Audacity to record any sound played through your PC.

I'm on Chrome, actually... and I do want to record onto disc.
  • Just googled there are programmes called Audacity and Wiretap. Can these be used in any way?

I'm sure there must be a similar add-ons for Chrome, although there's no reason you can't install Firefox as well if not.

There's also plenty of free software for burning MP3's to a CD. Have a look around download.com

Never used Wiretap, but Audacity can record whatever sound is playing though your PC and be saved as an MP3.
  • So, the answer to my OP question is: no.

Perhaps I should have made it clear that I am interested in audio only.

Replay Media Catcher is not free, but you can try it free first to see if it does what you need. It has the option of saving anything that you can hear on your computer direct to iTunes - from which you can burn a CD if you wish. RMC or any of the methods mentioned above would work, but legality is a different matter. I think we all know the answer to that one!

Are there perhaps other sources for the audio you're interested in instead of YouTube?

There's always the option of a hardware as opposed to software solution - connecting a USB DAC and recording to an external CD recorder..... what equipment do you have available as well as your PC?
