Claim company telling me I may be able to claim

Hi all,
I had a call from someone who got Capital claims capitalclaimsuk.net to ring me regarding PPI refunds.
I have had several mortgages and so cannot remember if I had ppi or not. I know I wouldn't choose this option as am very good at managing my money so avoid these insurances wherever possible.
After taking my details and the names of the companies I've had mortgages from (particularly Standard life), Capital Claims say that they think I have a good case however if I want them to proceed they want £295 upfront which they say they will refund me if they can't win me any claims.
Is this normal or some sort of scam? What should I be looking out for? As far as I know I'm not owed anything but they insist that many people are unaware that they are able to make a claim.
What to do??

So, have Capital Claims written to the lenders to check you even had PPI? Or, in your case, written to the brokers involved as they would have been the ones to recommend and set it up as Std Life was a broker mortgage. You wouldnt have taken PPI with Std life.Is this normal or some sort of scam?
If the claims company hasnt written to the companies and brokers to find out what PPI you have and you havent provided any detail then it is a scam. They cannot tell if you have a case or not if they have no details. As far as I know I'm not owed anything but they insist that many people are unaware that they are able to make a claim.
most people do not have a complaint. However, claims companies are notorious for manufacturing false complaints. The broker market is largely avoiding many of these false complaints. For example, the FOS stats recently published found that the UKs largest network of IFAs and mortgage advisers had just 16 MPPI complaints at the FOS. Brokers and IFAs generally have better files and record keeping and sell the product via an advice process. Banks generally sold the product via a non-advice process and didnt have much of an audit trail (although PPI is mainly a loan/credit card issue and much less a mortgage issue).
Bottom line is that if the claims company have done no work and not contacted the lenders and brokers (the latter is responsible where one is used) then they are not in a position to say if you have a case or not.
A warning also needs to be issued in that a number of claims companies that took up front money have failed and you dont get a refund when that happens. If they are that confident, they dont need to be paid up front.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
