UK Holiday cottages

Anyone recommend any sites for booking Holiday cottages in the UK?

Not sure f exact dates or locations yet, so anywhere is considered. Been looking at cottages4u but after searching for reviews I'm not sure as they are all bad reviews.

Anyone used them? Or recommend a company that are trustworthy?

Thanks.

sykes are very good...for price/location & show up on top cashback

Not what I call "chocolate box" types which is why I think the prices are better than e.g. english country cottages & you can sort via pets/family/pubs/hot tubs/beach etc - there's a lot of choice so you can edit out the ones no use to you :p

I've used this site successfully before -

The search criteria are very good and let you drill down as far as you want -to an individual town if desired. (You need to select England, Scotland or Wales to start with, rather than the UK).

However, note that as with many such sites, they're only effectively an introduction agent, and if you book your contract is with the owner of the property, so the quality/ service/ standard/ trustworthiness may vary considerably from property to property.

We have used ruralretreats for years. Going to our 8th this Christmas and never had a bad one. They only have a small selection so choosing is actually easier than a website with thousands listed.

If is Scotland I usually start by looking at www.visitscotland.com as find booking direct with owner often works out better. Given that most of the agencies say contract is with owner not really much different. Or I try www.cottageguide.co.uk

Have also used Sykes but been a bit hit and miss with them. Hoseasons were rubbish.

Whoever you book with go further than the brochure description look on google maps, google cottage in case it is on other websites that have more info/photos about it, tripadvisor etc

Since I've not got any ideas about location, does anyone have anywhere they'd like to recommend?

Looking for somewhere quiet, but not in the middle of nowhere. Close to a nice village etc? Preferably within walking distance of a beach.

  • We've used cottages4you and not had any problems with them. Also used dales-holiday-cottages.co.uk and they were fine too.
Hoseasons do cottages and also lodges. Some of the holiday parks with timber lodges on them are lovely.

A couple of years we went to one of Dales cottages called Puffins Nest, Seahouses, Northumberland - ref 4152. Quiet location, short walk to beach and the town of Seahouses is walking distance too. Sea views. I can recommend that one.

Ruralretreats have lighthouses on their books - very handy for the beach!

Used both Sykes and C4Y in the last year and both were fine. But it all depends on the property, nothing that the agent can really influence too much.
