make it all available for free, no problems then, that's what i do.
If you are selling it, it will be on the black market within hours anyhow, why worry, give it out free

It wont be on the black market at all because you would have the proper license restrictions in place, next time try to keep your comments a little more constructive.

Hmmm, bit harsh. I could see his point. Maybe not to such an extent, but managing licenses or trying to put in restrictions is very difficult to do, and more so the more popular the product becomes. There's nothing stopping one person buying one license and distributing it through P2P, using it more than once etc... Plus you'd possibly have to deal with code obfuscation etc... to make sure the app is secure and won't be reverse engineered in anyway.

It's a tricky model if you want to make money. If it is a good product, and it attracts traffic to your site, then traffic itself can be a very good way of making money.

Not really sure what you're getting at here, so I have to agree with thekid. If someone wants it bad enough then they will get round any protection.

The irony is that OP himself was looking at ways to get round a trial period of a piece of software that he found invaluable, but wouldn't pay for it and now he wants to protect his own stuff

Well never had any of my/firms two programs distributed anywhere else as I made sure that it was a unique key registration and if the same key popped up twice with the users info different than original purchase we just didnt supply the registration code, and if a person moved address we verified the last four digits of the credit card, its really quite simple to put safety measures in place but most people are to lazy, even MS.

and big companies that spend tens of thousands on their software don't have their products available 'freely' ie microsoft, adobe and many others? I don't think that the op will be spending the kinds of money needed to protect the software and any simple password type protection (especially just a protected zip file) will stop someone for all of 5 mins. Zip files can be cracked v quicklly, having a members only area and banning people won't matter as the password/activation code will be out in the wild and even a registration no. with activation code can be reverse engineered and people develope small applications to generate these.

If you're selling an eBook, try ClickBank.

If you're looking to create a site, try Office Live. They're offering free sites during and after their beta period with a free domain name. Might be worth trying to see if your venture works with the minimal expenditure.

Can you be sure that your software hasn't been reversed engineered and 100's of people are quite happily using it without the need for registration?

I think you're naive to think you have a perfect protection system in place.

    IMHO :)
