Creating a Website.... some basic questions

Hi. I'm a real newbie to this so please don't be horrible! :o:p

Basically, I need to build a simple website (already designed) that is selling a file. How do I go about hosting this file so that people could purchase it?

Secondly, how do I go about linking my site appropriately.

For example, "www.mysite.com/home" is the home. After registering the domain name, how do I get to "www.mysite.com/about"?

Is this easily done via 123reg etc? Or do you have any advice on this?

I think I've confused myself now!

Thanks for any replies!:money:

I would use 123-reg simply for buying the domain and look to another company like dataflame for webhosting.

When you have set everything up https://www.mysite.com/ will point to your hosting account. Depending on which software they use there will be a default file the server will send if a specific file isnt mentioned when someone types in your web address. The most common one is index.html.

So... you go to https://www.mysite.com and the server will send back the file called index.html from the base folder.

If someone then goes to https://www.mysite.com/about.html then they have specified which file they want and the server sends back the file called about.html from the base folder.

If someone instead goes to https://www.mysite.com/about (ie without a file extention like .html) it signifies it is a folder rather than a file. Therefore the server will go into the folder called about and then send the file called index.html from it.

Final example is https://www.mysite.com/about/me.html in which case the server sends the file me.html from the folder called about

There are ways that you can program the server to act differently from this but this is the basics

    Just one final question though...

Does anyone know how I could provide this file staright away after I have recieved the payment?

I've heard of "LinkLok" but I've heard it costs £15+

    Any cheaper alternatives out there?

If I email it out, there would be a delay which wouldnt be ideal.

As for the password protected thing. How would I go about keeping that protected?

You are going to suffer the usual problems - what is to stop someone getting the file and freely distributing it after?

If you password protect the access to the file what stops people distributing their login details?

Most payment sites give you a passback or enable you to put a link on the conformation page both of these can be used to give the people access to the information needed to gain access to the file - the former being easier to control access than the second - but the issues are something that are difficult to control.

  • make it all available for free, no problems then, that's what i do.
If you are selling it, it will be on the black market within hours anyhow, why worry, give it out free
All advice given by thekid is in good faith but remember these important facts:
    1. I'm lucky enough to live in Scotland(Scots Law may apply)...
    2. My motto is "What's the worst that can happen" you've seen the kids in the Comic Relief clips, is it to that scale? Then get a grip!
    3. It's only money...no really(see #2)
    4. I'm only a plumber...
