Vodafone iPhone 4S unlock.

So very likely to be getting a iPhone 4S from a mate who has ins at Vodafone. (Don't ask about it please). The problem is I want to use it with giffgaff but how can I unlock it?

Vodafone only allow contract customers to unlock it and I DON'T want to use a jailbreak/gevvy SIM. Is there anyway I can unlock it?

I heard if I get a PAYG SIM and top-up £20 and ring them they will do it. But I'm not too sure, and I don't want to waste £20 on a SIM card I won't use if they don't agree to do it.

I would try and get my family to help but one's on a 30-day rolling contract and I don't think they'd help there. Another is on a contract, but Vodafone state they'll only unlock the current phone tied to that contract. What can I do? I don't mind paying but want it unlocked geuinely

You can get it unlocked via ebay for ~£30, its the same unlock they use at Vodafone.

So your mate is reporting it stolen and claiming off his insurance?

They will block the IMEI and the phone wont work anymore.

You also won't be able to get it unlocked, via ebay or any other way if its reported lost or stolen.
