Hi everybody!
I have just had a years -worth of emails ( in my inbox ) just disappear ! I deleted a few this morning...all was well and then when I went back to 'inbox' there was NO emails available that were later than Nov 2010 . I use Orange as my homepage and link to an fsnet email account.
I see that Orange have been doing 'work' and stufff was unavailbale on Nov 5 and Nov 6. Do you think that I have been 'affected' by their works??
This happened a year or so ago when I lost other stuff one sunday morning, even though I know I had not done anything wrongly!
Any advise on getting my emails back ( my deleted stuff does not go into 'deleted file' ) or where I should turn to would be greatful.
Thank you

    Are you using webmail ?

If so, why ?, any free e-mail program will work with pop3 settings, Thunderbird, works OK. You would then have all your emails on your computer, not in the cloud.

But what software program are you using to access your emails? If you access them through your web browser, that's webmail. If you access them through a program such as Thunderbird, Outlook Express or Windows Mail, that's a desktop email program. Webmail is inherently risky, as it's held on the provider's server and not on your PC. Unless you are online, you cannot access it. All the above software is free, so why not use it?

It is defo webmail. I have to log on to t'internet and Orange home page apppears and then 'check your email' buttons and wait for it to load up......not thundrebird or Outlook Express or anything like that.
I looks as though I need to contact Orange...is that right...but which dept coz I dont actually pay them anything for providing the service. I used to be with them, until I went to Sky Broadband in Jan this year.
I am not very clever when it comes to pc's...if it doesnt work when I click, I am lost! :-(

OK, so you are using Orange webmail. But why do you think that Orange will continue to supply you with an email service, if you are no longer their customer? At some indeterminate point., you will lose access to that email account-this may or may not be connected with what has happened. And Orange will not be able to assist you with recovering the email that is missing.
Switch to GMail (10 minutes to set up an account) and download it to a desktop program such as Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Thunderbird. You will then have an ISP-independent address.

thank you and understood....but ....does that mean that I will NOT be able to access my emails from anywhere on anyones pc ? Whereas now, I can use anyones pc/lappy , log onto Orange and type in my email addy and password and see those emails. Could I still do that with Gmail??

    In a word,Yes. :)

Using an email client you have to ensure the relevant box is ticked, to 'Leave email on server', or similar. This will vary depending on whichever program you decide to use.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Yes, Gmail is a webmail service, so you can access it from any PC. But it can also be congfigured to download into any desktop email client-which is the way you should set it up on your home Pc. That way you have your data secure on your own PC, and not at the mercy of someone elses server.
