i10 is a cramped tin box where you will be squashed in against the door unless you are very thin and the i20 has a renowned design fault with the plastic trim under the steering wheel interfering with the angle of the legs to the pedals.

I tried both and immediately discounted the i10 but was pleasantly surprised by the i20 until I actually tried to fit in it and drive it.

My i10 isn't cramped at all (and I am not very thin!:D :o), in fact lots of people have commented that it feels bigger on the inside than the outside suggests it would be.
I've had mine 18 months and even just pottering about locally I get 45-50mpg, 55-60mpg on longer journeys.
The boot isn't the biggest, but the road tax is only £30 a year :D
2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shading
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end
    MFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07
    2021 £1250.00, 2022 £1500.00, 2023 £1500, 2024 £1350
    2025 target = £1200, YTD £9190

80mpg urban? I remain very sceptical and that's the problem with these figures. You buy one and end up doing 40 mpg round town, but the dealer says it has no problems, so you pay nearly 12k and save nothing on fuel. Before signing get one for a weekend and do some typical journeys.

I do 12-15k a year, but have just gone back to petrol, as my journeys were not good for modern diesels.

The official figures are not realistic and I would suggest taking the combined figure and subtracting 10mpg from that to give some idea of what is realistic.

Have you looked at cars in the 110-119g/km section? The road tax on these is nothing in the first year and only £30 a year after that.

Thanks for all the comments. The Rio is probably looking the best bet if I go down this route.
Checked my Fiesta mpg today after filling up; 40mpg on unleaded. That's in the region of £2k a year in fuel for 13,000 miles @ £1.30 a litre

75mpg on Diesel would be near £1100 at £1.40 a litre.
And I'd save £185 a year on car tax against current car.

Ps. It needs to be <110 Co2 to get the 100% writing down allowance; anything over only gets 20% WDA per annum.

I guess I'm used to proper sized cars. I did sit in two and felt incredibly cramped, far more than in a Fiesta, Aygo or Ka. I also thought the wheels and tyres very thin.

It would certainly get me to the shops but so would just about anything. I would worry though about being hit in one though, which worries me far more than road tax or MPG.

    Glad you're enjoying yours.

Ah, I see why you need a car with that level of emissions.

I would work on a figure of 60mpg rather than 75. If you get more than 60 it would be a bonus. Even at 60mpg it still works out at a saving on fuel of £600 a year.

Is there a website which allows you to sort & drill down all new cars by a number of criteria:
    On the road price
    mpg
    emissions
    doors
    diesel/petrol
    size of engine
    size of car
    Bluetooth etc?

So, I can choose all diesel 5d small cars with between a 1200 and 1600 engine which do at least 60mpg and have low emissions for less than 15k?

If not, there is a gap in the market :). I have looked at whatcar etc but none seem to offer this.

This means nothing if something like a range rover / transit or even mondeo sized car hits you on motorway.
