Your happy there thats all that matters.....Your bad and my bad may not be the same. Same as your perfect and my perfect may not be the same.

At 30-48k you cannot even build it for that.

Its supply and demand, the demand is not high thats why its so cheap. You know the area, so you will know why it so cheap in comparison to the build cost. I would guess its ruff or low employement that usual reason for cheap flats.(ex-council may also push the price down)

If it was a sought after area the price would be higher.

BTW i answered your poll ..said 25k and that would be my max.

I always think you can always offer higher. Reducing your offer is a bit more difficult. So start at the bottom and work up to your max.

From your description, I'd probably start at 20K and go upto 25K max.

That's a sweeping statement, care to elaborate ?

yes, i lived in ayrshire for a long time, and if something is cheap there is a reason, normally rough area, or perhaps a rural old mining area etc where there are zero prospects

Ok, Thanks for the replies, and votes in the poll, all interesting stuff.
I will try and reply to the points in turn.

hcb42, you can get a flat for £30k in most towns and villages in Ayrshire, they cant be all bad surely. Yes, most of the small villages have zero prospects, but 30 minutes to Glasgow helps.

justjohn, youre right, there are few if any jobs in the village, but we are 30 mins to Glasgow city centre, 10 to Kilmarnock, 20 to Ayr/Prestwick, and most people including myself and my wife work elsewhere. Also supply does outstrip demand. We did sacrifice a bit of location for a bigger/better house and space etc, but would add that we don't regret it or anything like that at all. We sold our old 1200 sq feet 4 bed deatched and bought this 3000 sq foot 4 bed detached for the same price(ok we spent £20k doing it up also).
There was a few big employers years ago who are all gone now and left a void in the job market, but as we're so close to the big towns it doesn't matter. I think young ones tend to move away, get a job/career/family, then move back, for a bigger house and just commute. There are a lot of elderly people and families, but few 20 somethings. In saying that, I have never been in any of the pubs on the main street on a friday night, not really my scene.

Its a bit weird, me having this debate as a couple of years ago I wouldn't have considered this area, but then we came to view a couple of houses last year and couldn't beleive the value for money and size etc. I dare say if you wanted a nice local country pub, I wouldn't have moved here. Its worth saying that we both have good jobs and could live anywhere we choose.

So I do agree with most of what you are saying, and we will agree to disagree with the rest, ie, the refusal to live somewhere that has flats for £30k. But the points you make are valid and thank you.

On the subject of the offer......I will be making one, probably on Tuesday, and will be going with pretty much the average of the votes. And will let you all know what happens.

    Thanks
