Do I have to leave Plusnet?

Hello
been with pn for a few years but late broadband speed has got worse and worse. Been thru the speed tests and their troubleshooting and they have identified a problem apparently sorted it out, told to give it a few days for the line to improve etc. done this 3 times over the last 18 months keep giving up and tolerating rubbish speeds, so reluctantly have now got my mac code. Don't really want to leave but also don't want to have to pay £144 for an engineer to come out. Is there anything else i can do?
These are todays line stats;
Connection information
Line stateConnected
Connection time0 days, 0:12:25
Downstream3,552 Kbps
Upstream448 Kbps
ADSL settings
VPI/VCI0/38
TypePPPoA
ModulationITU-T G.992.1
Latency typeInterleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up)12.5 dB / 22.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up)47.0 dB / 28.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up)19.3 dBm / 11.9 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local)16
Loss of Signal (Local)2
Loss of Power (Local)0
FEC Errors (Down/Up)592 / 0
CRC Errors (Down/Up)247 / N/A
HEC Errors (Down/Up)N/A / 0
Error Seconds (Local)178
don't know if this tells anyone anything?
thanks

If its a faulty line then it wont matter who you choose. The connection wont get any better until thats resolved.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

What results do the speedtesters give you?
Because your stats indicate that your speed is not too bad, you have a line attenuation of 47db so you are quite a distance from the exchange so are never going to get super fast speeds.
You are currently syncing at 3552kbs so should be getting about 3mb down, a lot of people would sell their grandmother for that speed.
Someone more informed than me may comment on your SNR.0 -
Are you rural and on a 8mb/s service? If yes then you are in a similar situation to us. Except of course you can get plusnet. We are stuck with BT as only choice and we are lucky to get 2.5mb/s on my PC and 3.5MB/s on OH and Daughter PC. They are right by the router and main box, where as I am downstairs and 15 meters away, through 2 walls etc.
There are things that can help a bit inside your house.
Do you have a proper Master socket hard wired in your home, ours was in the loft! Who has a phone socket fitted in a loft? How many phone extensions do you have? Either wired or cordless. Most domestic set up's should be 4 max and each one should have a micro filter fitted between the socket and the phone plug. If the phone lines are a long way from the master socket for your broad band this can also effect speed. I'd try sorting those areas out to start and see what happens. Also update any software drivers for the router as this can also have an effect. Little things to try first before you get that £144 open reach engineer out.

Follow the guide linked below ... I know it says ADSL2+ but most of the troubleshooting tips apply to all ADSL broadband types.
http://www.siteguru.co.uk/be/ADSL2PlusForDummies.pdf
Note: If you don't have a corded, analogue phone for the quiet line test you can usually get one for <£5 from the likes of Argos etc.0 -
The noise margin is high and as you rebooted it shortly before recording the stats it shows that your target noise margin has been set high by the line management routines. That is done to overcome instability and results in a lower sync rate. You probably haven't isolated the ring wire on your extensions or are maybe using plugin extensions. I imagine the link above should cover that topic but if not or you don't understand it ask and I'll try to explain.

I don't want to sound pedantic but with technical terminology it's important to understand the terminology you're using.
2.5mb/s and 3.5MB/s are very different.
M = Mega (1 million)
b = bit
B = byte
s = second
There are 8 bits in a byte therefore what I think you are trying to say is the two speeds you are getting are:
In Megabits per second:
2.5Mb/s and 3.5Mb/s
In Megabytes per second:
0.31MB/s and 0.44MB/s
Anyway in answer to the OP's question, I wouldn't leave Plusnet as I've found their technical support the best out of many really really bad ISPs. I would make sure your internal wiring as mentioned by other posters, is up to scratch before getting Openreach in to look at your line.0 -
Was with Plusnet about 18 month's, then when we couldn't use Youtube because of it unable to play anything. We checked the speed and it was all of 256bpm:eek: Rang a few times and they said it's more than likely your wiring, not using the main box. They said they could send an engineer out but it might cost up to £150.
So decided to ask for a MAC key as fed up with usual stuff from them, the adviser said if you leave, you are just taking your problems with you. So took a chance and signed up with Sky, plugged new modem in and with bated breath checked the speed and initially it was pushing 9 megs:T It is now up to 12megs, so it was a problem with Plusnet, but they seemed so uninterested, glad we left them.0 -
Hi
thanks for the replies.
The speedtests show around 256kps? about quarter of 1 meg?
Plusnet have suggested usual 'solutions' , the master socket is right by the front door so to do the speedtests i have to plug eveything in at a location which is completely impractical. The socket i use is more or less directly behind the master in the living room.
Have tried different routers and micro filters. I have disconnected the ring wire previously.

It's possible to find your current line speed (as set by PN) by going to
https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed
(go to 'my account' > connection settings > high speed broadband)
What's your 'current line speed' as per that page?0
