is it cheaper to buy carton tomatoes or tins?

Getting pretty fed up with the tin tomatoes going up every time I go to buy some:D got some from Aldi's 33p last night, got some cartons but have less in them from Tesco for 27p so which is best tins or cartons, please tell me:D

I have to watch the sugar content because of being diabetic so spend ages looking at tins as some of them have 8 or more g of sugar and as a diabetic per item should be 6 or less so have to put a lot of them back.

Do you bulk buy them when they are on special offer it is just the napoli ones etc are so expensive now even tomatoes loose have gone up, I used to use them or cherry toms and they are all up in price...

Well the fresh will be going up as we are edging out of the season now.

I generally use passata in cartons from lidl that is about 5p cheaper than the can. plus they are lighter to haul back from the shop :D

Personally prefer this in recipes but would use tinned if they were cheaper.

Where I usually shop - Sainsburys - they have the price per 100gram on the price ticket - it's written in smaller type underneath the price. It's on most of the branded goods and tins and packets, so it;s easy to see which is cheapest. Perhaps your shop does too but you just haven't noticed.

I've stocked up on cartons of pasata 'cos that seems to be a lot cheaper and in soup or curry it's much of a muchness, but Asda have Ktc tinned tomatoes for 20p at the moment do getting them stockpiled

I like using passata, mainly because the tomato content is more often
than not higher than the value tinned toms, plus you get more for your money.
tesco as an example, tinned value toms 400g 33p, value passata 29p for 500g

I but the tin tomatoes at Lidl, sometimes the ones with onion and garlic in and find they are very tasty and good quality.

I have tried the cheaper cartons of tomato from Sainsburys but did not think they were as good as at Lidl

I like the Lidl passata - a great product but I do think that the cartons are far too large so end up either refridgerating it and the wonder what I will cook next, or freeze whatever is leftover. It's great in soups, casseroles, curries etc but I just cannot stand pasta, it's totally lacking in imagination!

I might have to try Passata instead of tinned tomatoes then. The last 3 times I have been to Asda, they have not had any of the KTC tomatoes :(

How much is Lidl passata out of interest?

Just freeze the leftovers in a tupperware, then bring it out for your next recipe?
