They should easily have been able to locate the till that you went through and a quick check of their system would have showed that the goods in the bags were indeed the goods that went through the till. They should then be able to corroborate that with their CCTV footage that peeps did indeed go through the tills.0

seems to me the poster you quoted was simply elaborating on the ops situation to determine what rights op has.
not to worry, sorry again for confusing youCome on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0 -
I can understand why a busy store would take extra precautions when there is a festival on, and it's not really unreasonable to expect shoppers to have retained their receipt between tills and exit doors. It may have been more helpful to make this temporary policy clear from the outset so that you would have been prepared for this and given your son the receipt before you left, but these things happen and it seems like a honest mistake. As for them detaining your son - was it actually him they detained, or did they just say that he couldn't leave with the shopping? I would have thought that would make a big difference as to whether they acted within their remit or not. I also don't really understand your point about them refusing to call the police - surely you could have called them if you wanted to resolve the issue that way, but they are not obliged to contact them if they don't think it's worth it and clearly they didn't.
It seems like it was a mistake on the behalf of both parties due to the temporary rules imposed to protect the store during the festival - a pain in the behind but no harm done in the end.0 -

Actually if they think someone has shoplifted and wish to take any action, they are supposed to call the police as they have no power to take any action personally. If they didnt think it was worth it then clearly they didnt think the OP's son had shoplifted and shouldnt have detained him (or his shopping).
As said by myself and another poster, it wouldnt have been hard to them to check CCTV or sales records but they didnt. Hence why I think someone was taking just a little too much pleasure in their job.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
If the shop was checking receipts on exit, perhaps it would have been helpful for staff on the tills (or around any self service tills) to stress that to customers. Its my experience that they warn buyers of large electrical goods to have the receipt ready on the way out0
