I was thinking that because he liked to play with my iphone so much where you tilted the phone to play the games that he could do this with the ipad/tablet.
There are iPad games which you can control by tilting, but personally I think it's a bit big for that, those tilting games are better on an iPhone.

I've dropped my iPad from waist height and it didn't break, there is no way my laptop would have survived that (I think I was very lucky though, and the thick carpet helped!). So they are durable, or as durable as you can expect a tablet PC to be.

As others have said iPlayer etc work fine, as does YouTube. Online games probably won't, as they will probably need Flash (I haven't used iSwifter, mentioned by the previous poster, so can't comment on how well that works or not).

Carolwat Sorry mate, but to be honest I think this is over the top for a kid. If he has access to laptop/desktop for any school work (when he is old enough), and is happy with his DS3, then unless your or hubby want a i-pad, using his xmas box as an excuse then it is OOT. Maybe an X-Box or PS3 if there is not a games machine in the house, but he really sounds too young for this sort of spend. Just my take on it (my son is 26 now!!). DG

iPad doesn't have flash because Apple says you don't want it, the company dictates to you what you do and don't have, part of the reason why I don't like them but anyway.

I would advise, as I am typing from a tablet now that unless you play ALOT of games on your phone already then don't waste £500 on a tablet ad you'll just use it as a web browser which is what I've done and regretted it (wish I bought a 3DS, don't like touch screens)

It's the company who make Flash (Adobe) who are primarily responsible for there being no Flash on iOS devices. If they were able to make a Flash plugin that didn't require copious amounts of resources to run, I'm sure Apple would be far more amenable to adding it to the platform. A large number of Flash elements also require mice to function properly, which of course tablets and touchscreen phones don't have (menu hovering etc).

I had the same dilema and my main use for the device was always going to be for making music. The music making apps for Ipad are far more superior and plentyful that those on the android market. Saying that, I have found all the other aspects of the Ipad2 to be brilliant and I wouldnt go anywhere without it now !
Didnt waste money going for 3G either. I got the £100 cheaper wifi version and tethered to my jailbroken Iphone (using mywi) for internet connection !

I don't think this is the main reason. It's because Apple don't want to rely on Adobe for its development. Flash is totally closed and Apple would have no control over what was going on inside.

There would also be the possibility that people could use Flash to bypass the App store. Apple very tightly control everything they sell and Flash would loosen this control quite considerably.

Yeah I doubt Apple are interesting in giving Adobe that sort of control :P.

well adobe has now killed flash for mobile devices, so put simply no tablets in the future are going to have flash, (not that it matters as all reputable websites don't require flash on mobile devices to use the site even today)
