I'd go for the iPad, such a lovely gadget. I use mine all the time, and the rest of the family! (Grr!)

Only problem is doesn't have flash, but lot's of games that your son can play instead (Apps)

Actually, a young person needs a standard PC/laptop as well, since so many school activities will require wither PC software, Flash and a proper keyboard for composing essays while sitting with a proper posture.

Which is why this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-Transformer-Android-docking-keyboard/dp/B004TB0EXY is probably the right answer.

I have one and like it, this post was made from it :-P

Does anyone know the reason that the Ipad doesn't have flash capabilities?

I've been considering buying a tablet PC for a while now, preferring the Ipad but holding back because you can't use websites which use flash.
  • iPad doesn't have flash because Apple says you don't want it, the company dictates to you what you do and don't have, part of the reason why I don't like them but anyway.

I would advise, as I am typing from a tablet now that unless you play ALOT of games on your phone already then don't waste £500 on a tablet ad you'll just use it as a web browser which is what I've done and regretted it (wish I bought a 3DS, don't like touch screens)

He doesnt need a laptop yet as he wont be using it for school stuff for a while and even so we have a desktop and a laptop in the house anyway. He already has a ds and is quite happy with that rather than updating it unnecessarily.
  • I have an Android tablet, and a laptop.

If I want to do proper work I use my laptop - for internetting, facebook games and email I use my tablet.

I would say that the Apple/Android decision is a matter of personal taste, and that he should go to a shop and have a little go on each one.

I chose the Android option based on its versatility. Mine has a USB connection so I can plug in my hard drive and watch films on the train. It has 32gb of internal memory and a memory card slot also. It also has a hdmi out thing, but I've never actually used it - so that could well be a gizmo.

All in all I like it... but I imagine that I would equally like an iPad. They are similar beasts mainly.

Take him to Currys - where they are quite happy to let you have a little play, they order it on line - where android at least are discounted.

Problem is I dont want him to see it. He doesnt know about it.
  • Non-ipad if he wants to play online games, many use flash.

How old is he? If he is under about 13 I would also go non-ipad cost and durability wise (and he'll probably not know the difference).

You could always take him to PC world or similar with some excuse, have a browse around the whole store, linger in the tablet section and see if he gravitates towards one or the other.

If you want to play flash games, like the ones on Facebook on an iPad, then you can use an app called iSwifter.

Trouble with a lot of the Tablet's, is you dont have direct access to android market, plus honeycomb 2.3 doesn't have the best reviews. Shame windows 8 wasn't out now, that is aimed at tablet's so that will give apple a run for there money.
