Acer aspire one problem..

Hi everyone I posted on the Acer forum but have had no reply so thought I would try here :)

I wanted to know if anyone has any idea what might be wrong with my AA1... I was using it this evening and all of a sudden it turned itself off.

Now when I press the power button the power light comes on for 5 seconds and I can hear its starting up then it goes off.

I have taken the battery off and used the adapter but it does the same thing.

Does anyone have an idea of what it might be?

It has loads of my pics on there I hope I haven't lost them all

I really don't want to put it in the shop and get ripped off.

Thank you :D

You probably need to run a BIOS recovery.

Do you have a USB thumb drive and a working PC?

First format an USB flash drive with FAT. It does not need to be boot-able.

Put both FLASHIT.EXE and zg5ia32.fd in the root directory of the flash drive. The files must not be in a folder.
Turn the AA1 off and verify both battery and AC adapter are plugged in.

    1. Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port. Perhaps one on the right hand side of the AAO.
    2. Press and Hold down the Fn and the Esc keys together and then press the power button(whilst still pressing Fn+Esc).
    3. When the unit's power light comes on wait a few seconds and release the Fn and Esc keys.
    4. After the keys have been released the power light will start to blink. Press the Power button once.
    5. During the BIOS update process the display will be blank.
    6. Let the unit run and after approximately 1 to 7 minutes, the unit should reboot and the BIOS will be updated.

Tried what?? When did you do so? Before I posted?
If you are sure that my solution does not cover it, then you will have to look at similar problems and solutions

Acer, great machine but eventually you can get a lose connection on the power adaptor to the motherboard, should cost about £30-50 in local pc shop to solder on a new one. If you can find a friend that has the same machine, try swapping his charged battery for yours, if your machine starts up ok then it is the power connection to the motherboard. If not then guess you're looking at a new machine.:(
My Mind wanders, if found please return.

Check the fan is still working.

If the fan is bust the machine will shut itself down to protect the CPU.

The fan died on my AA1.

Thanks, I tried what you said TakeThis, I read it on another forum and it didn't work, I tried it again now following your steps and it still didn't work.

The tapping as suggested on the other forum didn't help.

How can I check if the fan is working? I can hear something starting up which sounds like the fan but its just for a couple of seconds before the system shuts down.

If I plug it into the mains the orange light comes on and if I leave it plugged in it goes green to say its fully charged.
