BSOD on Hibernate, W7, 8GB, SSD

Hi anyone got any ideas here?

I have an i7 lappy I beefed up with an SSD and 8GB RAM - replaced the OEM of W7 with a fresh clean install when I replaced the hard drive with an SSD, and used the same time to give the machine 8GB RAM. This may be pertinant because...

Runs a treat, goes into standby, shutdown no problems, but entering hibernate state (ie caching RAM to disk) it throws a BSOD, and I'm most disappointed. Anyone got any ideas? It rather spoils being able to use standby (when batt is low so it goes into hibernate) or other power saving plans too, as hibernate is the most useful state for most occasions.

You don't say, so I have to ask: Did you install the laptop maker's drivers for all on-board devices, rather than relying on those built into Win7?

Have you done a full test of all 8GB of memory with Memtest?

    What size is the SSD?
Is there enough room left for the hiberfil.sys file?
    Move along, nothing to see.

Have you got all the windows updates? I believe SP1 contained a fix for hibernate to SSD problems.

    Hiya,

Thanks for your thoughts so far! Good questions, good questions.

Memtest86+ doesn't find memory errors, SSD is 256GB, only about a third full, pretty certain I applied all the HP drivers from their site, and the HP online tools seem to think so. SSD and RAM both from Crucial, so not cheapo tat. Admittedly the firmware on the ssd is a version behind, I guess that's the next thing to try...

I only asked about the size in case you'd fitted a 32GB SSD. :)

I didn't really think you would have. ;)

Heh heh - it was an excellent question, show's you're not making assumptions... Take it you're familiar with thedailywtf.com ;-)
  • What make is the SSD?

If it's a Corsair or OCZ (or any other one using a SandForce drive controller) then have you updated the SSD firmware to the latest version? There's been some bugs in the SandForce SF-200 controllers that have caused BSODs/freezing on startup, standby and/or hibernate that have been fixed in the latest firmware.

Crucial - are they Corsair/OCZ rebadges do you know?

Hmm, no, they're definitely Crucial's own drive, and they definitely don't use the problematic SandForce controller.

Still, probably worth checking that the firmware is up to date http://forums.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD/bd-p/ssd
