    I've got a little Nano http://direct.tesco.com/q/N.1998514/Nr.99.aspx
and I shove it on my husbands Sony dock http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.205-1845.aspx

It's the first ipod I've owned and I'm pleased with it.
It's very neat, pretty straight forward to use, although Itunes can be a bit annoying at times (nothing a quick 'Google' hasn't sorted), I've put all my old music on there and downloaded a few albums and tracks with ease.

It's great for out and about, running etc. 'good enough' to boogy round the house to or have on in the background when we've got friends over.

You can see what you've got on it. Sort into playlists, by albums, your rating etc. or just select to shuffle your way through everything (which can be a laugh)

I'm sure there are loads of features I don't use, I just wanted something nice and straight forward that would play my music and wasn't that bothered about video/films.

I wouldn't go mad and spend a fortune and echo the 'try a second hand or refurbished model' suggestion to see how you get on.

I'd definitely go for one where you can see what you've got on it as I've had a shuffle type before and it can be annoying not to be able to pick what to play.

I agree you may get more for your money looking at other makes rather than ipod and I've had a old shuffle type Creative Zen stone in the past (which had a great sound)
I did initially resist the Apple giant but as my husband had the dock for his Touch I thought I'd give it a go and I'm glad I did.

Edit. My husband loves his Apple Touch so if you have home wireless internet it may be worth spending the extra for all the features.

    HTH.

If you have lots of music I would recomend you get the biggest memory you can afford, and the best Doc you can afford, the Ipod will only play as good as the doc, I have an Ipod Nano and hubby had Ipod touch, they are both 8g and we thought we would never fill them but now have to delete something to put new stuff on. We have a JBL doc travel size and the sound is fantastic but if you don't intend to use the doc for travel you can get them better for sound and cheaper, Currys are good, the let you take your Ipod and test the docs out for best sound.
  • My 12 year old wants an ipod for christmas, i know nothing about them, will she have to get her music from itunes?, is it expensive? and is there a way she can put the music she already has onto it like she does with her mp3 player? thanks in advance.

I'd suggest starting your own thread, so that the OP can still receive advice without it being confused with advice for you. :)

    Maybe you should have your own thread for this, but;

You need to install iTunes on a PC/Mac to load music onto the iPod (unless you get into using third-party software)

You don't have to buy any music through the iTunes Store, but you can if you want. The PC running iTunes will need internet connection and a credit card.....

If she has her music in mp3 format, she can 'Import' this into the iTunes library, then copy it to the iPod by Syncing the iPod to the library
  • sorry for hijacking thanks for the advice.

My in-laws wanted to do similar to what the OP seems to want to be able to do relatively recently - put all their CDs onto one format and have that, plus a decent radio for in the lounge.

They went for an iPod Classic (more storage but you lose the touchscreen and pretty colours) with I think it was a Sony dock + DAB radio that I know Tesco were doing a while ago - and seem pretty happy with that choice.

I would also recommend an ipod touch over a nano or a classic. you get far more features than just music playing - web, email, video, iplayer, any app you can think of etc. you can also stream radio over the internet on it. it would however be pretty useless if you didnt have already or be willing to add wifi to your home.
for the dock, you may consider these http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001MTGXWW as an alternative which you could also use with your existing setup
I have a pair and they sound fantastic but you can read a full review here from 'what hi-fi'

    thanks for all the advice.
I am a little clearer now about what I need - though still not ready to spend money! I was looking at a couple of mp3 player options when a friend mentioned that they are planning to upgrade and has offered me their old ipod nano if they do ... if that all works out I'll probably take it because it will work out far cheaper than buying something new, but if it doesn't come off I will be getting an mp3 player & speakers.

I definitely don't think I need an ipod touch - I have a laptop & a smart phone to get online/read email etc at home & out & about!
