talk to me about ipods ...

Ok, I am probably the last person under 60 who doesn't own an ipod, but as I can't wear the in-the-ear headphones it's never seemed something that I've needed - I listen to the radio in the car etc!
However I am seriously contemplating an ipod & speaker dock for my living room as it's a lot smaller than the existing hifi & easier to set up playlists etc.
1) what sort of ipod do I need? I'm guessing a shuffle won't do it?
2) I don't need the latest & greatest, so what *do* I need & where's a good place to buy one?
3) any more hints/tips for a novice user??

I have an 8gb Nano (I'm not sure if it's the 4th or 5th gen - I think 5th gen is shuffle) and I love it mainly because of the capacity and amount of media you can store on it

if you aren't too bothered about old / new, get some second hand ones from ebay

As you are a novice user they're quite easy to use, how is your nimbleness at your mature age? The ipod nanos are quite small and may find it hard to use it.

If you go for an iPod dock, HMV are selling a Sony with DAB/FM radio for £50

Is it just for living room use only, never going to taken out and about. If so then a generic MP3 player would be better, and spend a bit more money on the docking system or speakers, so you get better sound.

not quite sure whether to laugh at this or be offended! I said I must be about the last person under 60, not that I was 60 - I'm actually under 40 and have no problem with my fingers thank you very much!!

what would be a good price for a 2nd hand ipod?
I looked on ebay and it seems that around £50 for a 3rd generation nano or £75 for a 4th generation seems the going rate ...

neilwoods, could you suggest a generic mp3 that may work? would something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/NWZ-E443K-RECORDING-ABILITY-RECORDER-STATION/dp/B003T00TAO be any good?
I'm not a music connoisseur - I don't need top notch sound, just something to give a bit of background music when the radio is broadcasting football!!

Why are you insistent on an iPod, iTunes can be a bloody pain for transferring music, a traditional 'drag and drop' mp3 player might be a better choice. Most iPod docks can be used with non iPod mp3 players.

I am NOT insistent on an ipod - see previous message asking about mp3 player recommendations. As I said in my first post, this stuff is new to me - I haven't used an iPod or other mp3 player before & I am asking for advice from people who have as to what will suit my needs. I have friends who have ipods & docks & having seen one in use I thought it may be what I'm looking for ... I wil accept any recommendations - but please, no abuse!!

Sorry if my post came across too strong, just wanted to highlight that iPods are not the only mp3 players available and don't suit everyone.

Generally when you buy something with an "ipod dock" it will only fit Ipod's. You will usually have a socket to plug in another make of Mp3 player, but it won't charge it. Whereas the ipod dock would charge an ipod.

I have a 5th generation nano (the one with the video camera) and a classic. Our sony dab clock radio, fits both of these and charges them.

Ipod docks don't fit shuffles and I'm not 100% sure the current gen of nano will fit either.

Hope I haven't confused you even further!

If you only want it for the living room, I'd suggest you don't necessarily need an iPod.

If all you want is something more compact than the traditional HiFi, why not go for the Brennan JB7?

It's advertised in the Radio Times every week, and for those who don't demand ultimate sound quality, seems a very convenient little box.

Keep the speakers from the current HiFi, as the Brennan has built-in amplifier.

because it's over £400 which is rather expensive!!

I am agreed that I prob don't need an ipod, but neither do I need to spend £400 on a Brennan JB7!!
