At temperatures below 7oC, the compound used in standard tyres hardens giving less grip. The tread compound in winter tyres generally contains a higher percentage of natural rubber so that grip is maintained even at low temperatures, to help reduce braking distances on both wet and dry roads. This ensures that maximum safety and performance is delivered in extreme weather conditions.

If you are going to have the same tyres on your car all year round then it's best to have winter ones. Summer tyres are hopeless on snow and ice whilst winter tyres are OK in the dry.
    Can I help?

No probs having them on all year round.
If you like throwing money away. Winter tyres wear out a lot faster than summer/all season tyres above 7 degrees, especially in the dry.

don't feed the troll peeps, take a clue from the spelling.

To answer Harveybobbles very good question, i imagine many people have bought winter rubber for the first time this year, so it makes sense to get them bedded in before the temperature plummets.

Very warm for time of year, we should be in bitterly cold conditions already, not as i'm knocking the last few days of autumn warmth.
    what's wrong with my spelling?

anyway i bet 99.9% of new drivers don't know what winter tyres are why do people want to jump down my throat for asking?
Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?

Your spelling isn't too bad, although you did spell tyres with an 'i' and not a 'y'. However, American spelling seems to be gaining popularity on this board, so you could just regard yourself as an early adopter. If I were you, I'd be more worried about the grammar and punctuation. I'm no expert but both look a bit dodgy to me. It is also customary on both sides of the Atlantic to start sentences with a capital letter.

    You did ask. :D

Good point. In addition, I suspect that there are still plenty of experienced drivers who have no idea that specialist winter tyres are available in the UK.

Have you ever watched a rally team in action on an icy stage? There is no question of bedding tyres in, and they do sometimes cut the tread just hours before a race.
Winter tyres are produced to be used in certain temperatures, and will degrade if used in normal temperatures at normal speeds. Seeing as it is quite mild at the moment, and wheels only take 15 minutes to change, I think that this is a bit premature.
I should add that there is conflicting information on this, even from manufacturers. Avon say that you should bed in Winter tyres, but they are referring to studded ones, which should not be used on tarmac above 62MPH, so they are really designed for ice and snow - Lapland presumably.
Everyone knows that you should treat new tyres with respect for the first 20 miles or so, just to get rid of the mould release agent on the surface, but as for the first 100 or even 200 miles, the jury is out, because many people think that it is just the driver adapting to the different feel and grip.
  • how come so few people seem to stick them on their cars in the winter then i reckon most people don't know wot they are not just kids like me.

Bit of a new thing , idea imported from the continent in the last few years. Insurance companies only just waking up to the fact fitting them is not a modification they can charge you a bundle for
You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)
  • wot do you do after winter then take them off and put normal ones on and just store the winter ones in your house til next year?
