not the same company but we were told by a third party working on sky behalf that we did not need a mac code and they would arrange everything, I then got a notice from Bt stating that the line was being disconnected but the internet was staying with them we had to phone Sky, who told us we did need the mac code. I just got one sent via email from bt, gave it to sky and that was that.

the only other option is that although they don't need a mac, you need to cancel your contract with bt, found this, hope this helps

  • No, you do not need a MAC code. The cable network has nothing to do with the phone network (BT). You are not "migrating".

When the installers arrive a new co-ax box will be installed for the cable service (or more than one depending on how many services you take) and a phone socket will be installed for the phone service if you take it (cable broadband does not work over phone lines, so you don't have to have one)

You will however be likely to be charged a small rip-off fee levied by BT Openreach and passed on to you via your "losing" ISP as a final "sting in the tail" on leaving, which is a charge to unplug and disconnect the broadband from the phone line because you aren't migrating to another provider using said phone line. Believe this is usually about £30.

Strictly speaking nobody needs a MAC code, the main purpose from the consumer's point of view is to avoid the charge above because it is used to track migration and avoid the charge. Otherwise the first ISP is disconnected and you get the charge above then the new one is connected (another ADSL phone line based supplier) and you then sometimes incur a conenction charge. The MAC code is meant to avoid those two charges being levied in that circumstance. Which does not apply to you.

You will not need a MAC code for BT to VW CABLE services, but you will for their 'national' service i.e. via your phone line already.

So.... Are you taking VM via Cable?
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

A MAC is for a transfer of ADSL service to ADSL on the same line. VM cable is not an ADSL service, so no MAC is required. You can have a BT ADSL service runnng together witha VM cable service in the same property, they're entirely separate. How did you give BT notice, and how much notice did you give?
