txt scam!!!

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Just a warning and also to see if anyone else has experienced this and who to go to about it.

In August I received a txt from a number not stored in my phone. They asked me "where are you? x". When I asked them who they were they replied simply "Emma". When I asked Emma who they said "Emma W". I know an Emma W so I just assumed it was her an apologised for not recognising her number. She asked for a "favour" - could I buy her a mobile phone top up and txt her the code, just until next week? I said I would try but didnt promise anything as I was busy and pretty skint myself. I kept getting txts all day asking if I'd managed to go and buy a top up, then I got txts late into the night and all over the weekend. I ended up really angry with my 'friend' and just ignoring her. I then found it odd that she didnt seem angry with me and continued to communicate with me via facebook etc like nothing had happened.

Tonight I received another txt, "where are you? x". I asked them the same question and they replied "Sarah x", "Sarah who?" I ask, they replied with "Sarah B x". Now this time I'm suspicious, I know a Sara B but no Sarah B. They asked for the same thing, a mobile top up just until monday. This time I told them no straight away and I've not heard anything from them since.

Obviously this is a scam, one which is very believable, could have you spending your money willingly and/or possibly falling out with friends because of their rude and ignorant manner. I want to know how they have my number and how they have managed to tie my mobile number to certain friends names. Obviously they slipped up tonight but to know my friends names and surnames it's really creepy! I do not and never have had my mobile number on facebook. I have a special email account for facebook which is in no way linked to anything else in my life including my mobile.

Has this happened to anyone else? Who do I report it to? Can I do anything else about it?

    Not really, you, sarah or emma( or ny one else of your shared friends) may have left their phone somewhere it was accessed. any of you could may have stored your name and number together online (remember when facebook used to offer to scan your email and add contacts?) and thats been compromised, or its a random name and they got lucky for you first time. Emma and Sarah are common names.

    I know an Emma W and a Sarah B, maybe the texts were meant for me??
    If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

    It's text, not txt. There's an e in it.

    Jesus angelcakes, take a chill pill!

    Yes Geri was being pedantic, but there's no need for a response like that.

    If you get any other texts like that again, just ignore them.
