we were in the same position as you, we had a monitor already so we bought a reconditioned base unit (packard bell) from PCworld online or maybe it was currys?. we used a few discount codes from MSE and got it for £229 delivered. we are not very technical but so far it works great, download videos music and do all that kinda stuff no problem. you definitley need one with more the 56mb. i would go for at least 512 if you're choosing one.
good luck

Is there anywhere near you that recycles computers - as there is a charge for taking them to a land fill. We have a company locally that takes them off your hands refurbs them & sells them on http://www.completewasters.co.uk//computers/index.html there might be something similar near you. I'm in Leicestershire by the way. Happy hunting.

We're having broadband re-installed on our pc this weekend, but our pc is as ancient as the hills and really slow. It's got 56mb i think. I want a new pc but we haven't loads of money and wondered if any of you guys could tell me the best place to look for a decent-speed but cheap pc? I would prefer one with a cd and dvd rewriter. I have the monitor and keyboard and stuff so would it be better to just go for the base unit? Where would i get one from? I'm hoping to get away with only spending £100-£150, or am i living in a dream world?
Pretty please would someone be able to help me?
Hi there, I have used this site for my inks and blank cd/dvds and always found their service good.

Although this only has a CD drive, you can buy a DVD writer for £20

Just noticed on this one, there is no operating system installed so you will have to use your Windows disk from your old PC.
Alternatively have a look around the site, there are a few more in stock at your price bracket with Windows installed. HTH.Be an amateur! Professionals built the Titanic, amateurs built the Ark!!

for that price ebay would be your best bet someone may just have bought a new computer so selling a decent old system or you could buy the base unit only from ebay shops for around £200 and i bet someone on freecycle has an old moniter they dont need0 -
I don't want to use ebay, as i've bought some PS2 games from there and they didn't work. Same game title, different people and 6 year old upset!
Thanks for the links, I'm having a look at them now. Basically, all we want to use it for is to download movies/songs for personal use, surf the net and have our CV's on there (always handy). Oh and for the kids to play some games, but they're not too bothered as they have PS2 and xbox.
We have monitor, keyboard, mouse and printer already, so i thought it may be cheaper to just get the base bit. We really haven't a lot of money and that's why i want it as cheap as possible. Our old one will do, but to download songs just takes ages and ages and it almost always crashes, especially when i have things like anti-virus and MS Office installed.0 -
I've bought a couple of base units from these guys before.
Refurbished brand name base units with Windows XP installed.

I would always stick with a name brand and then it's easier to get new bits for it or upgrade etc.

Is there no one you know who could help with pc, if there was you could buy a barebones pc for around £100 (case, motherboard, processor, memory) you would need your orignal windows install disk though. Or simply transfer hard drive to barebone pc (may get driver issues), this is usually cheapest method, does require some tinkering.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
No, i don't know anyone who could do that for me. That Misco one looks good though, i will speak to DH tonight and see what he thinks.
Thanks guys, i knew i could count on you all0
