Where can i get a cheap PC?

Options
Ok, I'm not very technical and haven't a clue about PC's, so please bear with me and don't slate me for being thick :D

We're having broadband re-installed on our pc this weekend, but our pc is as ancient as the hills and really slow. It's got 56mb i think. I want a new pc but we haven't loads of money and wondered if any of you guys could tell me the best place to look for a decent-speed but cheap pc? I would prefer one with a cd and dvd rewriter. I have the monitor and keyboard and stuff so would it be better to just go for the base unit? Where would i get one from? I'm hoping to get away with only spending £100-£150, or am i living in a dream world?

Pretty please would someone be able to help me?

I got a new computer three days ago for £350.00 from Dell, which includes an 17 inch tft monitor.

    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=D4XESS02&l=en&oc=D01c15a&rbc=D01c15a&s=dhs&sbc=ukdhsftdppdesktop2

Its fast enough for me and i have the home repair option. You can adjust the specification for extra ,as required, when ordering. The monitor/picture is good too.
100-150 new, is living in dream world.(no offence)

  • ok, thanks. Is there a place online that sells second-hand/reconditioned pc's perhaps? We can't afford £350.
  • for new PC's, it can't harm to have a look at Novatech.co.uk. They have always been pretty good for me although i've bought accesories rather than PC's from them. The last time I looked their desktops were quite cheap and if you're anywhere near Portsmouth or Bristol (a long shot i know) you can pick up from their factories to save on delivery costs.

If you ask http://www.express-pcs.co.uk/ can build pcs to your spec if thats any good. They are quite resonale . I think for £150 you would need to build it yourself to get all you would need. Hpayy hunting :)

If you can run to £200 this doesn't look bad. It hasn't got a DVD re-writer but you can easily add one for not much money later on, e.g. www.cclonline.co.uk currently do a Liteon for £25.

I've used Morgans quite a bit in the past and I've always found them very good.
  • We've been buying Dell for at my work and have no complaints. Good quality and prices that are hard to beat right now.
Just be careful of adding on too much in the configurator - the price can easily double after you've "upgraded" a few bits n bobs!
  • I'd go with the Dell recommendation - there's a £95 off deal at Dell outlet which ends at midnight tonight (Thursday 25th) which could get you pretty close to £150.

Try here and you should be able to get a decent spec for about £230 exc VAT. With the £95 offer you should get down to around £160 in VAT (but not including delivery). They're recon but then so are lots of the parts used in the "proper" Dell PCs, and you still get the 1 year warranty with the outlet.

    Maybe nearer to you?
I use MCS.com who amongst other things sell Dell returns.
If you register for emails they regularly have clearouts at up to £100 off their prices, laptops too.

  • There are some very reasonable priced Dell p4 optiplex units on ebay that are refurbished that may be of interest to you.
They are around the £100 mark.
  • thank you for all your help, i've got a lots of research to do now. It's like a maze isn't it?! I found a reconditioned one at Curry's for £229, so i'm comparing specs and stuff now. unless of course someone wants to give me their's for free!!! :D
