Compensation paint spilage on shoes

LONG STORY SHORT... Me and my Nan was in Poundland when the lid off a tin of paint we had in our basket came off and went all over our shoes. The paint was oil based so our shoes was ruined! The staff were unbelieavably rude, we was also left for a long time whilst they got a manager, then to get tissue and then to get paper to take our details down. Anyway, after emailing Poundland's head office regarding the complaint and waiting ages just for an aknowledgement I recived this reply below...
Firstly, I would like to apologise for the length of time it has taken for
me to get back to you on this matter.
On viewing the CCTV footage of the incident, I can advise that the time
scale in which this matter had been dealt with by staff members does differ
slightly to the information you kindly provided.
I appreciate your concerns and having viewed the pictures sent to me below
of the damage to the shoes. We would like to offer you £20.00 as full and
final settlement of this matter this will be offered in the absence of any
receipts for the shoes being provided.
I can arrange with our Woolwich store Manager for the money to be collected
on your next visit. When collecting you will be required to sign an
acceptance form and provide valid ID.
Thank you for your time.
I think this is really unfair as my boots alone came to more than £20 when I brought them, and thats without my Nan's aswell!
What's everyone's opinion on this? Should I just accept £20 as they don't even seem interested in how much they actually cost me and my Nan!

How much are your shoes worth, and how old are they?
How does the CCTV recording differ from what you said?0 -
Hi
I have not seen the cctv myself. I think thay are saying that the times I said I waited for members of staff was different to the CCTV. Both shoes around £50 for both. Mine were fairly new, my nan's were older.0 -
Failry is how new exactly? And the same goes for 'Older'
Without a time frame its very hard to say what sort of level of 'compensation' you could say you were entitled too,if any, above the £20 offered."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
A lot may also depend on what position the tin was in when the lid came off.
If it was laying on its side in your basket and there was a warning on it saying "keep upright" or something similar, then you might not really have much of a case to agrue for compo.0 -
Im presuming for the lid to come off, the tin must have been put into your basket lying down sideways so one of yu has to take some of the blame surely. Dont you agree it was a bit silly.
I would write back to them, asking for £20 each and see what they say.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

people taking responsibility for their own actions ? don't be silly
with regards to ops case, it's hard to advice without knowing the details, but i'm inclined to agree a paint lid doesn't just fall off when standing upright, but then they are usually quite tough to get off in normal circumstances so I suspect the lid must have been somewhat loose or damaged.0 -
if the OP had checked the tim before placing in basket they would have know the lid was loose. as i am a quailfied painter it take some force to open a tin of paint due to the vacuum between the lid and the paint.0
-
thanks for all the replies.
Good point, could have checked the lid before putting in the basket, but on the other hand are the staff suppose to do that too?
The paint was put in upright, but fell on to it's side when other things were put into the basket.0 -
What have you done with the shoes - thrown them out, ruined but kept as evidence or cleaned & continuing to wear them "ruined"?
Is this merely an unfortunate accident rather than negligence by anyone? (if so I'd accept the goodwill gesture personally, particularly as you appear to have no evidence as to cost & dates of purchase should a dispute ensue)
Are there any warnings in the shop about lids & spillages & if so did you follow them?0 -
Hi,
If you knocked it over puttin other things in the basket then I think they've done more than enough offering you any money. You can't really say it's their fault....
