Broadband provider with UK tech-help?

I've been having a bit of a miserable week with BT's foreign tech-help. My broadband is so slow it's absurd (130Kbps now and getting worse by the day, should be several Meg). I've been trying to get their tech people to fix it but I keep stumbling on the language barrier.

They talk at high speed, give you a load of confusing and conflicting crap you don't have any need for, then when it does get to the bones of what you need to hear the phraseology is all wrong, so they're 3 sentences ahead before you've realised that was a bit you wanted to know!

I still need my internet put right though, so I must wade on. (6 calls so far). :(

If I wanted to leave BT for another broadband provider, one with an intelligable tech staff, where could I take my custom? Do any of them still employ people on our own island or is that hopelessly optimistic?

  • There are a number of ISPs that do have UK based help centres; I can't vouch for all of them except the one I use which is Zen Internet. They don't offer loss leader prices but I have found them excellent value for what some would say is a higher price - well, they are compared to the likes of Talktalk, Sky etc.

But you get what you pay for, in my case 6Mb on a rural BT line, no traffic shaping, my download limit is 50GB which I never need to increase, but extra can be bought if needed.

I came to Zen via BT, then Eclipse (which went dire following a buy out by Kingston Communications) and have remained with them for nearly 5 years.

First off you'd have to figure out what providers are available to you: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search

That tells me who I could potentially go with, but it doesn't tell me which broadband providers have mainly or solely UK call centres. For example, Sky is a possibility, where are their techies, anyone know?

I've heard (anecdotally) that O2 customer services aren't so good.

I'm with BE. CS is in Bulgaria but their command of English is very good, and 1st line tech support is excellent - of course they have a script, but they also have the savvy to deviate from it to reach the proper conclusion quickly.

Plusnet are in Yorkshire and are open 24/7 which is an added bonus. £6.49 on their Value broadband up to 10GB if you are on Market 2 or 3 otherwise £12.99.

The BT customer service people's English is probably very good too. It's the OP who needs to work on their listening...

I am with o2 for broadband landline and mobile . I have had no trouble with customer services and yes they are all based in the UK. I have found customer services very very helpful when i have had the need to ring. :)
