Well everything's growing for me so far - chillis, tomatoes, chives and dd's sunflowers all doing well. Have potted a few of them on and off to buy more plant pots and compost today!0

Im hoping to do some veg growing this year, might go and look at seeds to plant tomorrow.
saw bogof seeds at wilkinsons today might go back tomorrow and pick some up. Thinking about carrots, leeks, cabbage, brocoli and cauliflower, not sure how easy any of this is to grow. (any advice would e greatly appreciated!)
dad has a green house I can get things started in and hopefully will let me have some space in the garden when its time to plant outside.
can I join in with you guys and compare progress?finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!0 -
I've got onion and tomato seeds to try growing this year. Haven't planted them yet. Also have raspberry canes in the garden that I got from freecycle last month.
The beginnings of my herb garden that I started last year has mostly survived, am definately going to add to that this year and plant some more. Not sure what yet though.Debts: Mum £3923 0% APR0 -

Yes you can join in with me, if you wantI'm addicted to gardening. Are you looking to grow just in pots or do you have some space in the garden? May I ask where you are in England, I'm not strange
its because of frost you see.
Brilliant that you have a green house, will you be able to grow plants in there, or is there only space to get things going?0 -
hi linda,
thats not a strange question im down south in hampshire (southampton)
The green house isnt a bad size but dad is an avid gardener so there probably wont be a great deal of space for me, he is going to clear a small patch in the garden, not sure how big as most is taken up with plants and shrubs.
was hoping to find some veg to plant in pots as we have a fair sized patio area that I could possibly usefinally debt free and want to keep it that way!!0 -
I've just got my first allotment...
So I'm a newbie gardener too!
Thanks Stilerin for your help - can I just ask - how do you keep your seeds? Once the packet is open what do you do so the seeds can be used in future years? Thanks in advance

Whoops hit the thanks button in error.......... but thanks for asking anyway.
I'm not as careful as some about keeping seeds really. Best to keep them dry, 'cos moisture is what they are looking for to begin germinating. Not too warm either, some keep in the fridge in a tin.
I have a small plastic 'tool or hobby' type box which I keep in the garage. Once the packet is open and I have used some seeds, I smooth out any air I can and fold over the corner of the packet. They are then 'filed' in this box. Some seeds are used once a year and can be filed for next year (tomatoes etc), others are filed to be sown again in a few weeks (lettuce, radish, beetroot etc).
Some seeds will need to be fresh every year, eg parsnip and sweetcorn, others will last for years if kept in a reasonable condition. Just think about when a new motorway is carved out of the countryside....... loads of poppys appear from nowhere!!
I have a book, (packed away at the moment cos I've just moved) called Kitchen Garden (I think) which will give you all sorts of basic info. When to sow, germination time, when to plant out, distance apart, how long the seeds will keep etc
Nothng works better than just giving it a go though. Last year I bought an acorn squash from the supermarket in March(?) cooked and ate the squash, then planted the seeds and pulp in a pot. Once they had germinated, I repotted singley and could have opened a market stall with them, I had so many.
Nature usually survives in spite of us, so just have a go and watch what happens............0 -
Hi there, thanks for the help so far. I now have 2 sets of 3x3 seed trays of nicely growing onions, and the same for leeks.
Feeling very proud, but a bit nervous as the roots are showing out of the bottom so I'm going to replant them tomorrow. :O Fingers rossed I don't kill them all!
