Hmm run out of photos. Probably because I'm usually trying to contain the mud rather than taking pix !!:rotfl::rotfl: It might be a different story after the gundog training after the rain we've had today!!

Some Dogs are too intelligent for Gun dog training, a dog that can think will never make a good gundog as they tend to get things wrong by thinking of an easier way to do things themselves.
More fail from being too clever than too stupid.

I train my dog with and without a clicker - I tend to use a "bridge word" in lieu of the clicker, again to keep the uniform of the same sound or word. So you pick a word you don't use too frequently - most owners frequently chat away to dogs and end up giving words a neutral meaning so a word like "Bingo!" or "Great!" keeps it more unique to the purpose of training.
The problem with your voice is that dogs pick up on the tone. You're trying to teach your dog not to pull, after 5 minutes you get frustrated, and your voice changes. You try doing training after a long day at work, you're tired and your voice lacks any conviction. The clicker has the benefit of remaining constant.
The other alternative that I've seen used is a 'click' with the tongue. No need to worry about carrying a clicker around with you then!

My Dad & the rest of my uncles have always had gundogs & used a distinctive whistle to call the Spaniels back.I remember when I was a kid,I went on a shoot with Dad down to the Wash, one bloke had a KC Spaniel that he couldn't control,Dad almost shot it when it ran across his gun track line. Some dogs make good gun dogs, others should be kept as pets.

You'd pay a fortune to get hair like that at Nicky Clarke.

I think I should point out that I'm only doing this for the dog training, rather than any thoughts about shooting anything! It's very much an exercise to get better control of my little village idiot!

But why not if you can get paid to be a beater / picker-up - or at least get some free food out of it.

My Mum's Lab was gundog trained.....unfortunately he then disgraced himself on his first shoot by retrieving a few pheasant and then taking the decision to cut out the middle man and pull the birds out of the air just as they were taking off. He came back with a live pheasant and dropped it at the feet of the gun. My Mother was quietly told that her dog would never make a good gun dog.

On the upside, the dog remembered the trick and for years supplied my Mother with free pheasant by scooting off into the undergrowth on walks and plucking them out of the air just as they broke from cover. What was slightly more embarrassing was the day he came out of the woods dragging a Muntjac deer by the leg or the day last summer when, in front of a load of tourists in Cornwall, he tore off into the undergrowth can came back with a he fox cub he killed before dropping at our feet.
