Ethernet cable, is it all the same?

Is your wifi encrypted? having encryption turned on will cause woeful lag for gaming. Two types of ethernet cable, you want straight thru connection type and not crossover, any decent shop assistant should be able to tell the difference and point you in the right direction.

All wifi connections are encrypted at layer 2 otherwise your traffic would be as clear as day to everyone or anyone listening on your network.

WPA2 Personal is the standard and makes no difference in "lag" but there is an obvious delay in broadcasting radio signals wirelessly and other affecting factors.

Wireless is rubbish for gaming, use an Ethernet cable for the absolute best although not necessary buy CAT5E STP cable but it's not cheap. Normal CAT5 UTP will do fine.

You can get a 20m long cable for less than £3 so find the cable to suit.

Then get yourself a "ethernet switch" for under the TV for the games consols etc.

You can buy a cheap 5 or 8 port Ethernet switch from the like of eBuyer for about £10
