Ethernet cable, is it all the same?

Hi the wireless connection to DS1 PS3 is very poor- a lot of lag (so I am told) I was thinking about buying some ethernet cable from ebay to run from the router to the ps3.

I wanted white so that it wouldn't show up so much and was also thinking about getting the flat cable so that it would go underneath the doors and the doors could still close.

I was also looking at splitters so that he could have a lead to the PS3 and another to his laptop.

I have a TP-Link TL-WA701ND 150Mbps Wireless Lite N Access Point which might do the trick if I could get it onto repeater mode.

Really what I want to ask is... whats the best way of improving the connection for DS1. His room is the furthest away from the router.

if your worried about colours and shape, just buy homeplugs that will save you trailing lots cable about your house.

I can get ethernet cable for under £4, I looked into homeplugs a while back and they were £50 to £60

  • the flat cable will just have the internal wires next to each other rather than bunched, so it's all the same.
How do you mean with a splitter? you'll need a small hub (3 / 4 port) on the end of it with an RJ45 cable for each device.

Don't think that splitter will work, not a 100% sure, but i do believe that splitter allows 2 devices to send a signal at the same time over a single Cat 5 cable, then you need another splitter at the end to split the signal again.

Something like this would be better. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gray-Push-Button-RJ45-2-Ports-Switch-Plastic-Hub-White-/150688018706?pt=UK_Computing_NetworkSwitches_RL&hash=item2315b4b112#ht_1637wt_1262

Yes Ethernet cable is basically all the same. No point spending more than you need to. Flat stuff is a good idea to hide it though, but I've always been able to tuck the round stuff down between the skirting board and the edge of the carpet to hide it.
A cable will massively improve his "lag" issues, wireless isn't really suitable for gaming.

Another thing that is very beneficial is to move his PS3 into a "DMZ"- See here: http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network/How-to-put-your-PS3-into-a-DMZ/td-p/10655314
Not hard if you're half way techinically minded.

How I did it was this:
I ran an extension cable from my master telephone socket up into my attic which is my "games" room (NERD!). The Router lives in the room so that the Xbox, PS3 and network storage can plug into it by cables. The router then Wi-fi's the rest of the house fine from that location for laptop and non gaming use. I wouldn't recommend having the router in your sons bedroom for reasons of security (physical access to the router is important!) but moving it closer to his room may help with cable routing.

PS3 wifi is truly terrible. I connect my PS3 up to a wifi access point which then connects to my wifi router and even that is faster than doing it natively with the PS3's own wifi.

Flat cable as described will not work, due to crosstalk; however suitable twisted pair flat cable with each twisted pair of wire next to each other is available.

Home plug so much easier, and now so much cheaper.....

My Mind wanders, if found please return.
  • Can confirm that the splitter will not work for you, better to do as someone suggested and run a cable to a hub, then patch cables from the hub.
